Second Round of the Playoffs Tidbits & Records

The second round is complete. The cream is coming to the top now. Here are a few tidbits from this week's football action.

   *   Be sure to catch a special edition of our podcast this Sunday night as we will be posting a new episode with some guests this week. Chris and TP will join Kurt and I to discuss the matchups this week. Also follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Tuesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions. Last week the guys went 9-3 predicting the games.

   *   All the official playoff brackets are posted as the fun continues. Win and keep playing next week. The 7A teams will be playing their semi-final games this week while all other classification move on the quartefinals.

   *   Monday we will unveil the latest AHSFHS Power Ratings for every team along with our predictions each playoff game. Scoring averages are posted now.

   *   Only one undefeated team lost in thee second round and that was Loachapoka who fell to Brantley 14-12. The remaining undefeated teams:
       7A - Central Phenix City (11-0), Mary Montgomery (12-0)
       6A - Clay-Chalkville (11-0), Hillcrest (12-0), Muscle Shoals (11-0), Saraland (12-0)
       5A - Gulf Shores (12-0)
       4A - Catholic Montgomery (12-0), Jackson (11-0), West Morgan (12-0)
       3A - Lauderdale County (12-0), Madison Academy (12-0), Mobile Chr. (12-0)
       2A - B.B. Comer (12-0), Locust Fork (12-0), Reeltown (11-0)
       1A - Elba (12-0), Leroy (11-0)
       AISA - Lowndes Academy (13-0)

   *  In 7A three #1 seeds advance. 6A topped that by having every #1 seed in the quarterfinals. Only three other times since 2000 have all eight top seeds advanced to the quarterfinals in 2009 1A, 2019 1A and 2020 2A. The other classifications this season with #1 seeds in the quarterfinals: 5A=5, 4A=5, 3A=5, 2A=7, 1A=4.

   *  No #4 seeds advanced past the second round this season. The #3 teams faired slightly better placing seven teams in the 3rd round.

   *   So who made Wadley mad? The Bulldogs went on a rampage by defeating South Lamar 81-27 at home. The Brooks Lions are also scoring at will it seems recently and knocked off Priceville 70-42. One note here is that 50 teams set a school record this year so far for most points allowed in a season. That has to be a record even without looking it up.

   *   Upsets in the second round of the playoffs? The biggest upset according to the AHSFHS Power Ratings was Clarke County knocking off favored Goshen 22-15 after entering the game as a 14 point underdog. Maplesville took care of Sweet Water 28-21 after being a pregame 11 point underdog. Overall the Power Ratings predicted 38 of 51 games correctly this week for a winning percentage of 75.0%. All but three of the losses were in games where the winner was an underdog by less than seven points and one game was considered even.

   *    Comeback wins? Pike Road fell behind 17-0 at the half before defeating Spanish Fort 31-17 behind the efforts of QB Cason Meyers. Mary Montgomery also trailed Enterprise 10-0 at the halftime break before scoring three times in the last 5:14 to advance to the semi-finals. The Vikings, who did not cross midfield in the first half, got a 21 yard field goal with just five seconds remaining and no timeouts.

   *   Close Games? Parker got by Oxford 21-14 to move on to the third round for the first time since 1998. Madison Academy recovered a Mars Hill fumble at the four with just 18 seconds remaining in the game to preserve a 21-14 victory.

   *   Statement wins? Gulf Shores shut out Charles Henderson 41-0 to give notice to 5A south. Mobile Christian took out Houston Academy 35-10. Jackson defeated reigning 4A state champs Andalusia with ease 31-7.

   *  B.T. Washington, Headland and Mary Montgomery won a second round playoff game for the first time in their school's history. It will be their first trip to the quarterfinals.

   *   Teams who have not reached the third round in a while include; West Morgan (1994), Hewitt-Trussville (1996), Locust Fork (1998), Moody (2004), Eufaula (2006) and Hackleburg (2009).

   *  Teams who have never won a third round game include: B.T. Washington, Gulf Shores, Headland, Locust Fork, Mary Montgomery, Moody, West Morgan and Westminster Christian.

   *   The best quarterfinal matchups I would most like to see; Hillcrest (12-0) at Saraland (12-0), Clay-Chalkville (11-0) at Muscle Shoals (11-0), Cherokee County (11-1) at West Morgan (12-0) and Locust Fork (12-0) at Fyffe (11-1).

   *   Teams who have never hosted a third round game but will this week include; Headland, B.T. Washington and Guntersville.

   *   Best home team records in the third round of the playoffs for teams hosting games next week. Saraland 4-0, Thomasville 5-2, Pisgah 2-0, Fyffe 7-4, Maplesville 14-2 and Pickens County 6-2.

   *   Teams you do not wish to face in the third round along with their all-time record in the third round of the playoffs. Maplesville 19-8, Pickens County 12-3, Saraland 5-1, Reeltown 13-6, Wadley 6-2 and Clay-Chalkville 7-4.

   *   Gulf Shores (12-0), Locust Fork (12-0), Mary Montgomery (12-0), Lauderdale County (12-0) West Morgan (12-0) are all off to the best start in their school's history.

   *   If we missed anything I will try to include it in our podcast tomorrow. We will cover all the playoff matchups for each classification.

   *   Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for 164 consecutive weeks since the final poll in 2009.

   *   The longest winning streak belongs to Saraland who has won their last eighteen games following a 51-14 win over Briarwood in the second round of the playoffs.

   *   Saraland has won 22 consecutive home games and will be back at home next week in the third round against Hillcrest.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 22 consecutive road games and will be traveling to Jacksonville this week.

   *   Fyffe continues to dominate Class 2A as they have for the last ten seasons. The Red Devils are currently sitting on a string of 318 games without being shutout.
