 2023 Preview

Southeastern completed the 2022 season with a 10-2 record. Last year Southeastern captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 2A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Mustangs. Southeastern reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Pisgah by a score of 48-28.

No team at Southeastern ever won more games in a season than the ten victories last year.

Southeastern is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only eleven seasons. They have managed a record of 41-73 over the past eleven years.

Over the past 11 seasons, Southeastern has managed to compile a record of 41-73. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 47th in Class 2A and 311st in the AHSAA. The Mustangs have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time.

The Mustangs are led by head coach Kevin Byrd who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 33-23 over the past five seasons at Southeastern. Under his direction the Mustangs have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won one region crown with Coach Byrd.

The Mustangs enjoyed their best season in history by posting ten wins last year. They have improved their win total in each of the last eight seasons.

The Mustangs are considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Receiver Cole Williams will return after catching 27 passes good for 532 yards and 4 TDs as a junior last season.

Williams will also lead the defense this season after collecting 111 total tackles last season.

The Mustangs open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Ragland on Friday, September 1 at Joan Ford Field. Last year the Ragland Purple Devils finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in second place in Class 1A region six. The Purple Devils lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Marion County by a score of 59-22.

Southeastern and Ragland have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 1-3-0 record against the Purple Devils. They last met in 2022 with Southeastern winning by a score of 40-20.

Southeastern lost 2A All-State  receiver Ben Hall to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.
