 2023 Preview 


       Montevallo completed the 2022 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Montevallo finished sixth in Class 4A region three with a 3-4 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       Montevallo took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2017.

       Montevallo was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bulldogs want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.9 points a game.

       Since 2010, Montevallo has gone a combined 67-72. Their 48.2% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Montevallo has managed to compile a record of 128-133. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 4A and 198th in the AHSAA.




       The Bulldogs are led by head coach Blake Boren who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 19-14 over the past three seasons at Montevallo. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Boren.

       The Bulldogs could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Montevallo came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

      QB Braxton King will be returning after completing 73 of 125 passes for 1,143 yards last season along with 13 touchdowns.

      CB Javon Rogers will return in 2023 to anchor the defense.

       The Bulldogs open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Shelby County on Friday, September 1 at Wildcats Stadium. Last year the Shelby County Wildcats finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in fifth place in Class 5A region three. The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a loss to Woodlawn by a score of 31-7.

       Montevallo and Shelby County have met a total of 73 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 33-39-1 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2022 with Shelby County winning by a score of 21-6.

      

       The Bulldogs return 4A All-State Senior defensive lineman Charlie Adams. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
