 2023 Preview

Leroy completed the 2022 season with a 13-1 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 1A region one, the Bears earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. The Bears reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 1A State Championship by defeating Pickens County at the Alabama Super Seven 42-20 in Auburn.

The Bears won as many games as in any season since 2010. The Bears hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Massey saw improvement as they won thirteen games following a 2-8 record in 2021.

The defense was very stingy last season as Leroy ranked 7th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 10.4 points a game.

Since 2010, Leroy has gone a combined 106-56. Their 65.4% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Leroy has finished a combined 233-89. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 1A and 30th in the AHSAA. The Bears have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time.

The Bears are led by head coach Jason Massey who is entering his eleventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 83-41 over the past ten seasons at Leroy. Under his direction the Bears have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Massey. Coach Massey led to a state championship in 2022. Over the course of his career, Coach Massey's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of nine times and won two region championships.

If Leroy can win seven games this season, Coach Massey will reach the 100 win milestone.

The Bears graduated a lot of talented players on both sides along the line of scrimmage from last years team. But several key skilled players will be returning including a first team all-state QB.

The Bears enter the 2023 season riding a 6 game winning streak. They have won 6 straight games on their home turf at Bobby Farish Field at Palmer Stadium.

The Bears enter the season with expectations of not only a region crown but will be contending for a trip to the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region one and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the South in the Class 1A Super Seven come December.

QB Brayden Huebner completed 83 of 170 passes for 1,377 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,153 yards and 19 TDs.

Leroy also returns RB Malik Howell for his senior season after he rushed for 889 yards and 8 TDs.

WR Taylor Crumedy will be lined up again after catching 35 passes for 771 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The Bears open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Clarke County on Thursday, August 31 at H.G. Prim Stadium. Last year the Clarke County Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 7-6 and in first place in Class 2A region one. The Bulldogs lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 2A playoffs to Highland Home by a score of 19-0.

Leroy and Clarke County have met a total of 72 times on the football field. The Bears have a 30-38-4 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2022 with Leroy winning by a score of 13-0.

The Bears lost a ton of talent to graduation off the 2022 squad. Replacing these players will be a key to another successful season. Leroy lost 1A All-State  offensive lineman Maddux Everett to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates defensive lineman Bryston Dixon, defensive lineman Malcolm Pugh, linebacker Shamar Harris and offensive lineman Jon David Cox.

The Bears return 1A All-State Senior quarterback Brayden Huebner. He was named to the first team last season. The Bears also return Senior receiver Taylor Crumedy. He was named to the second team.
