 2023 Preview

Gaston finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Gaston finished sixth in Class 2A region six with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Bulldogs won as many games as in any season since 2016.

The Bulldogs would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, Gaston has gone a combined 46-90. Their 33.8% winning percentage ranks 47th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Gaston has managed to compile a record of 128-146. Their 47.0% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 2A and 217th in the AHSAA.

The Bulldogs will be under the direction of new head football coach Jesse Pruitt as they enter the 2023 season.

The Bulldogs will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region six this season.

Josh Hester will be back this season at running back after rushing for 1,037 yards and 8 TDs in 2022.

The Bulldogs open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Asbury on Friday, August 25. Last year the Asbury Rams finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 3A region seven. The Rams ended last season on a positive note with a win over Woodville by a score of 36-32 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Gaston and Asbury have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 5-1-0 record against the Rams. They last met in 2022 with Gaston winning by a score of 64-42.

The Bulldogs return 2A All-State Junior offensive lineman Nehemiah Samples. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
