 2023 Preview 


       Deshler completed the 2022 season with a 12-1 record. The Tigers cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Deshler captured the region seven title and a number one seed in the Class 4A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Deshler lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Oneonta team by a score of 62-21.

       The Tigers won as many games as in any season since 2014. The defense allowed a team record 319 points last season. The Tigers hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Malone saw improvement as they won twelve games following a 3-7 record in 2021.

       The high-scoring Deshler offense ranked 17th in the AHSAA. They averaged 41.6 points a game.

       Since 2010, Deshler has gone a combined 106-56. Their 65.4% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Deshler has finished a combined 239-89. Their 73.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 4A and 26th in the AHSAA. The Tigers have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time.




       The Tigers are led by head coach Patrick Malone who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 12-1 record in his first season at Deshler. The Tigers saw improvement from a 3-7 record the season before coach Malone arrived. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Malone. Over the course of his career, Coach Malone's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times and won one region championship.

       Coach Malone has the fans excited about the prospects for the 2023 football season. The Tigers got back to their winning ways last season and it should continue this fall.

       The Tigers enter the 2023 season riding a 11 game regular season winning streak. Deshler has won 7 consecutive region games. They have won 7 straight games on their home turf at Howard Chappell Stadium.

       The Tigers are considered one of the favorites for the region seven championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

       The Tigers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Madison Academy on Friday, August 25 at Howard Chappell Stadium. Last year the Madison Academy Mustangs finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in first place in Class 3A region seven. The Mustangs lost in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs to Sylvania by a score of 48-45.

       Deshler and Madison Academy have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 1-3-0 record against the Mustangs. They last met in 2022 with Deshler winning by a score of 42-35.

       Deshler lost 4A All-State  defensive lineman Walter Goggins to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate running back Jakari Belue.
