 2023 Preview 


       Boaz completed the 2022 season with a 4-7 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region seven, the Pirates earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Boaz's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Russellville by a score of 63-10.

       Since 2010, Boaz has gone a combined 59-80. Their 42.4% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 5A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Boaz has managed to compile a record of 131-138. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 5A and 200th in the AHSAA.




       The Pirates are led by head coach Jeremy Sullivan who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 29-36 over the past six seasons at Boaz. Under his direction the Pirates have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Sullivan. Over the course of his career, Coach Sullivan's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times .

       The Pirates could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season with a few breaks and a little improvement.

      Junior QB Tyler Pierce will be returning after completing 178 of 300 passes for 2,169 yards last season along with 12 touchdowns.

      Junior Tristan Childers will be back this season at running back after rushing for 910 yards and 11 TDs in 2022.

      Kicker Jose Arreguin made 7 of 8 field goals with a long kick of 50 yards. Converted 33 of 34 extra-point tries and averaged 34.7 yards per punt

       The Pirates open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Jacksonville on Friday, August 25 at L.F. Corley Field. Last year the Jacksonville Golden Eagles finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in third place in Class 4A region four. The Golden Eagles lost in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs to Catholic Montgomery by a score of 44-27.

       Boaz and Jacksonville have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Pirates have a 2-2-0 record against the Golden Eagles. They last met in 2022 with Jacksonville winning by a score of 27-7.

      

       The Pirates return 5A All-State Junior kicker Jose Arreguin. He was named to the second team last season.
