 2023 Preview

Andalusia completed the 2022 season with a 14-1 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 4A region two, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. The Bulldogs reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 4A State Championship by defeating Cherokee County at the Alabama Super Seven 28-7 in Auburn.

No team at Andalusia ever won more games in a season than the fourteen victories last year. The last time they won as many was back in 1977. The 599 points scored by the Bulldogs last year were a team record in a single season. The Bulldogs hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Taylor saw improvement as they won fourteen games following a 9-5 record in 2021.

Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have Finished 23-6 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Andalusia has gone a combined 122-41. Their 74.8% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Andalusia has managed to compile a record of 186-109. Their 63.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 4A and 74th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2008.

The Bulldogs are led by head coach Trent Taylor who is entering his ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 84-25 over the past eight seasons at Andalusia. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Taylor. Coach Taylor led to a state championship in 2022. His 267 wins rank 8th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Taylor's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of thirty times and won seven region championships. He has a 39-29 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches.

What do the Bulldogs do for an encore in 2023? You may think they have nowhere to go but down but not so fast. They did lose a lot of talent to graduation but Coach Taylor will have his squad ready for another championship run in 2023. The Bulldogs have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 64-47 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 4A and 43rd in the AHSAA.

The Bulldogs enter the season with expectations of not only a region crown but will be contending for a trip to the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region two and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the South in the Class 4A Super Seven come December. The Bulldogs have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2014 and this year should be no exception.

QB Jack Lathrop will be returning after completing 137 of 219 passes for 2,298 yards last season along with 30 touchdowns.

JMarion Burnette will be back this season at running back after rushing for 1,473 yards and 17 TDs in 2022.

Landen Marshall will be returning to the defensive line and will anchor a very solid defense in 2023.

The Bulldogs open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Opp on Thursday, August 24 at Channell Lee Field. Last year the Opp Bobcats finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 3A region two. The Bobcats lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to W.S. Neal by a score of 27-13.

Andalusia and Opp have met a total of 93 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 53-36-4 record against the Bobcats. They last met in 2022 with Andalusia winning by a score of 35-7.

Andalusia lost 4A All-State  offensive lineman Brody Stewart to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates defensive lineman Cameron Johnson, receiver Kaden Denson and athlete Dorean Crittenden.

The Bulldogs return 4A All-State Senior quarterback Jack Lathrop. He was named to the second team last season. The Bulldogs also return Senior running back JMarion Burnette. He was named to the second team.
