 2022 Preview

Waterloo finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Waterloo just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region eight with a 3-4 region record.

Waterloo took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2017. The Cougars lost as many games as in any season since 2015.

Since 2010, Waterloo has gone a combined 40-84. Their 32.3% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 1A over the past twelve seasons.

Over the past 16 seasons, Waterloo has managed to compile a record of 57-103. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 1A and 319th in the AHSAA.

The Cougars will be under the direction of new head football coach Jeremiah Stricklin as they enter the 2022 season.  Coach Stricklin served as the defensive coordinator at Waterloo last season.

The Waterloo Cougars will play in Class 1A region eight during the 2022 season.

Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. It will be an uphill battle for the Cougars if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region eight this season.

The Cougars open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Brilliant on Friday, August 19 at Waterloo Stadium. Last year the Brilliant Tigers finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 1A region six. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Carbon Hill by a score of 42-0.

Waterloo and Brilliant have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 5-7-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2019 with Waterloo winning by a score of 40-19.
