 2018 Preview

Ashville completed the 2017 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Ashville just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 4A region five with a 2-5 region record.

The Bulldogs have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2005 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Bulldogs last playoff victory came during the 2001 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Ashville was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bulldogs want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.6 points a game.

Since 2010, Ashville has gone a combined 24-56. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 48th in Class 4A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Ashville has managed to compile a record of 100-146. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 4A and 273rd in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2005.

The Bulldogs will be under the direction of new head football coach Barry Simmons as they enter the 2018 season.

Coach Simmons' overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 10-11 (47.6%). Over the course of his career, Coach Simmons' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time .

The Ashville Bulldogs will play in Class 4A region six during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Bulldogs remain in 4A but move from region five over to region six.

With a little luck and some improvement, the Bulldogs could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region six this season. Ashville has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2005 but hope to return to the post season this year.

The Bulldogs open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Ragland on Friday, August 24 at Joan Ford Stadium. Last year the Ragland Purple Devils finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in third place in Class 1A region four. The Purple Devils lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Brantley by a score of 20-19.

Ashville and Ragland have met a total of 32 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 26-6-0 record against the Purple Devils. They last met in 2017 with Ashville winning by a score of 33-32.
