 2016 Preview

Bessemer Academy completed the 2015 season with a 13-0 record. Last year Bessemer Academy captured the region two title and a number one seed in the Class AAA playoffs. They finished region play with a 4-0 record. The Bessemer Academy Rebels claimed the AISA-AAA State Championship by defeating Monroe Academy 34-6 in Troy.

No team at Bessemer Academy ever won more games in a season than the thirteen victories last year. The last time they won as many was back in 2007.

Over the past two seasons the Rebels have gone 25-1 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Bessemer Academy has gone a combined 63-13. Their 83.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class AAA over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Bessemer Academy has gone a combined 197-97. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class AAA and 4th in the AISA.

The Rebels are led by head coach Josh Wright who is entering his ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 82-20 over the past eight seasons at Bessemer Academy. Under his direction the Rebels have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times. They have won five region crowns with Coach Wright. Coach Wright has won two state championships at Bessemer Academy, the last coming in 2015.

Coach Wright's overall record as a head football coach in eight season stands at 82-20 (80.4%).

The Bessemer Academy Rebels will play in Class AAA region one during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Rebels remain in AAA but move from region two over to region one. Bessemer Academy will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season.

Region one will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season.

The Rebels enter the 2016 season riding a 13 game winning streak. They have also won 26 consecutive regular season games. Bessemer Academy has won 15 consecutive region games. They have won 21 straight games on their home turf at Rebels Field. While most teams rebuild during the off season, Bessemer Academy has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Rebels enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one of the favorites not only in their region but to play in the AISA title game in November.

The Rebels open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Monroe Academy on Friday, August 19 at Rebels Field. Last year the Monroe Academy Volunteer finished with an overall record of 13-1 and in first place in Class AAA region one. The Volunteer lost in the Class AAA State Championship game last season when they were defeated by Bessemer Academy. They final score was 34-6 in Troy.

Bessemer Academy and Monroe Academy have met a total of 27 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 15-12-0 record against the Volunteer. They last met in 2015 with Bessemer Academy winning by a score of 34-6.
