          This next rivalry is fought every year among two school only twenty miles apart. Athens and Decatur first faced off on the gridiron in 1924 with Athens coming away with a lopsided 96-0 victory. Since that time the schools have played almost every year with a few exceptions. They have met every year since 1937 except 2009 & 2009.

          In 1940 Decatur defeated Athens 16-7 to hand the Golden Eagles their only loss of the season. The very next season they did it again by beating the Golden Eagles 19-0. Once again in 1945 they kept Athens from the ranks of the undefeated by shutting them out 12-0.

          The 1948 football season found the Red Raiders pulling off the feat for the fourth time in less than a decade by beating Athens 13-0.

          The teams have played a total of 96 times over the years with Decatur holding a 61-30-2 advantage in the series. Since 2006 Decatur only holds onto a slight nine to eight advantage.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
