Battle was named All-City, All-State, All-Southern, Teen Magazine All-Southeastern, All-America, Birminghams Player of the Year, Jefferson Countys-Most Valuable Lineman, and West End Highs Most Valuable Player in football; All-City in basketball, and two-year letterman in track. He played varsity football only two years, both as regular, and captained the 1958 team. He specialized in catching passes, receiving 43 for 880 yards, eight touchdowns and an extra point as a senior.

Foley outscored their opponents 433-6 in 1961. The Lions were named state champions by the Alabama Sports Writers Association that season.
