Thomas rushed for 2,797 yards and 38 touchdowns on 299 rushing attempts his senior season alone. He would finish his career with 7,634 yards for a new state record running the ball. He also scored 83 touchdowns in his three years as a starter. He would set a state record by scoring 38 touchdowns in a single season and 83 for his career. He led West Jefferson to the state title game his senior season before losing to Brantley. As a sophomore he ran for 2,166 yards and followed that up his junior year with 2,485 yards.

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
