            Played running back on the varsity football team one year; also ran-track. Earned All-County, All-State and Most Valuable Player honors. Gained 1,076 yards on 134 carries and scored 16 touchdowns.

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
