Mark Smothers graduated from Addison High School and the University of Alabama. Smothers first head coaching job came at Section High School in the fall of 1975. He would remain with the program for four seasons. Smothers served as an assistant at Austin High School from 1979-82 before landing the head football coaching position at Vinemont in 1983. Over the next twelve seasons he led Vinemont to nine playoff appearances, winning five area and region titles along the way. In 1995 Smothers accepted the head coaching position at Hanceville. In 2006 Smothers took over the football program at Holly Pond High School for one seasons that produced a 3-7 record. He returned to Vinemont as the softball coach for the 2007 season before taking the head football coaching position again in 2009. His two seasons at the helm produced a 10-10 record. Smothers would retire from coaching following the 2010 football season. Coach Smothers overall football coaching record is 142-145 in 27 years as a head coach. His teams qualified for the playoffs a total of fifteen times and won eight area and region titles during his career. |
