Billy Odom played quarterback at Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama, for Coach Larry Henderson. Odom became the head football coach at Baker High School in 1974. He was ahead of his time. When the wishbone and the veer were all the rage in Mobile area high school football, Odoms teams at Baker were passing the ball all over the field. His innovative offense was similar to the common spread offenses of today. Odom coached at Baker from 1974 through the 1987 season before stepping down. He spent a year as a graduate assistant at Mississippi College and three seasons as an assistant coach at Murphy. In 1992 he took over the football program at Alba High School in south Mobile County. He retired from his head coaching duties after the 1996 season but not from the sidelines completely. Odom has remained active with the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Football Classic and the Senior Bowl. Coach Odom led the teams at Baker and Alba to a record of 76-112 during his career. For his work on the field and off, Odom was honored with the Larche Mobile Lifetime Achievement Award. |
