Since 2000 these two team shave claimed thirteen state championships in
football. UMS-Wright won eight and the Saints claim another five. So when it
comes to this 'Battle of Old Shell Road' the stakes are for more than just a
rivalry win. It can lead to a state championship for these two west Mobile
private schools. St. Paul's first fielded a football team in 1972 and the two schools met for the first time in 1978 with the Saints coming away with a 9-0 win. St. Paul's actually won the first six games in the series which is their longest winning streak against UMS-Wright. The schools are only a couple of miles apart and recently the game kicks off the season for the two schools. In the early years they played to end the season. In 2017 the team entered the game with identical 8-1 records. St. Paul's pulled out a 9-0 victory and would go on to claim the 5A state championship in Auburn. UMS-Wright recovered quickly from that loss to win five straight playoff games and take home the 4A Blue Map in a 21-7 victory over Fayette County in the title game. Both the 2024 and 2025 games went to overtime before a victor could be decided. The Saints won both contest in dramatic form and claimed another year of celebrations in west Mobile. The series has been close in recent year with the Bulldogs holding a slim 24-23 lead in the young rivalry.
