The teams have both won 1 game.
|
|
| Comments: 6A Mae Jemison comes in 2-3 and coming off a 36 to 18 loss to Fort Payne. Mae likes to throw the ball around with Jaden Burroughs. They had a decent amount of success in the passing game against a pretty solid Fort Payne team. |
7A Sparkman also comes in 2-3 but coming off a big 36 to 28 win against Huntsville which started a win streak now at 2 games. Braylon Lawson rushed for over 300 yards in their win against the Panthers. |
This is only the second meeting between these crosstown rivals (Mae has only been in existence since 2016). Mae stepping up a class at the wrong time as it just seems that Sparkman has finally found some momentum. I don't think Mae can stop the Senators on the ground, therefore it will be a long night for their defense. |

Series:

Wadley holds a 1-0 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Glenwood comes in 4-1 with there only loss being to 5A Valley by 6. They just blanked Beulah 40 to 0. Jalen Stanley is a pretty solid QB, but he really has some receivers who go after the ball and win a lot of 50/50 balls including #9 & #16. |
Wadley is 5-0 ranked #1 and is averaging just over 55 ppg (not counting forfeit game.) The Bulldogs have so many homeruns threats from the backfield like Lynch and Wilkes just to name a couple that they are a handful for any defense. |
Glenwood will definitely be the toughest opponent the Bulldogs have faced thus far. This is only the second year that Glenwood has participated in AHSAA and while they won the region last year they really haven't had a program defining win. Should they get past Wadley, although a couple of classes down, it would be huge for the program. Give me the Gators in a battle. |

Fayette County holds a 52-32 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Fayette County is on their second straight away game in the midst of 5 in a row. This also marks the 91st time these two powerhouses have met. Winfield won going away last year but this a new year. Fayette Co's only loss thus far was in a battle to Gordo 34 to 28. Jake Rickman torched Haleyville for 325 yards and 6 TD's. |
Winfield is 3-2 and coming off a 55 to 28 victory against Phil Campbell. A game that saw the Pirates rack up 243 yards on the ground, Kyson Key accounting for 89 while amassing 3 TD's. |
This is about as even as a match as you can find. Common opponents: Gordo beat both, Fayette Co by 6, Winfield by 14. I said earlier in the year that I really like Winfield's offensive balance, and that is still true and they are home this week so that being said, they burned me once, so give me the Tigers. |

Series:

Hamilton holds a 65-22 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: This makes the 89th time these two have met. Hamilton holds a distinct advantage in the series including 20 out of the last 21. The Aggies roll in 5-0. A quiet 5-0 some would say. The question is have they had any real competition yet? Regardless of competition, QB Mason Holloway has done his job including coming off a 302 yard 5 TD performance against Curry. Oh, and he also ran one in to top it off. |
Sulligent stands at 3-2 and are coming off a thrashing at the hands of Vincent 34 to 8. A game I think most of us thought would be a lot closer. JohnWil Spruiel leads the Blue Devils both on offense (QB) and defense (SS). They'll definitely need him to make a lot plays this week while stepping up 2 classifications. |
I still believe Sulligent is a very good 2A team and will make some noise in the playoffs, but I feel Hamilton has just a little too much here. I really like Holloway against the Sulligent secondary. |

during the 2025 football season.
Series:
Montgomery Academy and Luverne have met 3 times on the field....
Luverne holds a 2-1 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Comments: Montgomery Academy won this game comfortably a year ago 36-8, but don't expect it to be that easy this year. Luverne ranks 1st in the state in scoring offense and 3rd in scoring defense regardless of class, while Montgomery Academy ranks 15th in scoring defense regardless of class, so this one will be a battle. |
The first thing that stands out about Luverne is that they have size and speed everywhere that most 2A teams just won't be able to match, and it has shown on the scoreboard. Through four games they've outscored their opponents by an average of 66-3. That's impressive regardless of the quality of competition. Senior QB Kane Smith is a dual threat guy with 10 TD passes to go with 8 rushing TDs. They've also got multiple tall receivers with the ability to go get the football. But the truly remarkable thing about them offensively is their two young backs in Sophomore Elliott Harris and 8th-grader Jadaveon McCreary. Both are lightning fast and score about every 5-6 times they touch the ball. Coach Bobby Hudson says the Linebackers are the core of the defense, led by Tony Franklin, Caden Wiggins, Jayden Laird, and Khi Harris. |
Montgomery Academy has been difficult to figure out just how good they are this year. They are a pretty young team, though, so sometimes you can see a bit more inconsistency when they is the case. They average well over 200 yards on the ground per game, but got shut down by Wicksburg in a game they won 14-9 despite just 65 yards rushing. Five different players have multiple rushing touchdowns. They have a great defense themselves, not allowing more than 9 points in any game this season. They've to a spectacular athlete in Junior #4 Braden Gordon, a two-way player who holds offers from multiple major colleges, including Notre Dame. |
We're about to find out if Luverne is a state championship contender. In my opinion, the two favorites in 2A, Coosa Christian and Reeltown, would both be slight favorites over Montgomery Academy. The AHSFHS computers have the Tigers as 9-point underdogs, but they still have time to grow in the second half of the season. |

Series:
Colbert Heights and Falkville have met 4 times on the field....
The teams have both won 2 games.
|
|
| Comments: Comments: This will be a very interesting matchup between two very different teams. Falkville is a defensive team with a struggling offense, while Colbert Heights is undefeated with the 5th best offense in 3A. |
Falkville is coming off of back-to-back losses to Coosa Christian and Southeastern to sit at 2-2 on the season. They should still be a playoff team from a solid region, and their defense is one of the best in 2A. They're allowing just 16.5 ppg, and that's despite the fact that their offense is only scoring 13 ppg. They have a decent passing game, but their rushing attack has been pretty poor thus far, as they averaged less than 100 rush yards per game through their first three games. |
Colbert Heights started last season 4-0 before floundering down the stretch to finish 4-6. They've started one game better this year at 5-0 and have one of the highest-scoring offenses in Class 3A at 47.2 points per game. However, the schedule gets much tougher down the stretch for the Wildcats. Following Falkville, they'll take on their region's four playoffs teams from last season, and they'll need to knock off at least one of them to reach the postseason. |
I think Falkville is better than their 2-2 record indicates, and I'm just not sold on Colbert Heights given their soft schedule thus far. I'm very interested to see if Falkville can either shut down Colbert Heights' offense, or possibly get their own offense out of a rut. |

Series:
Hokes Bluff and Glencoe have met 82 times on the field....
Glencoe holds a 42-39 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Comments: This is one of the top rivalries in the state between two teams that have met every year since 1944. Glencoe leads the all-time series 42-38-1, but Hokes Bluff has won the last 9 games in this rivalry. |
Head Coach Bayley Blanchard seems to have Glencoe well ahead of schedule as he looks to rebuild this program. They haven't won more than three games in a season since 2015, also the last time they beat Hokes Bluff, but after pulling off victories over J.B. Pennington and Walter Wellborn, the Yellow Jackets look primed to finish as high as third in this region, as they'll likely be heavy favorites in all of their remaining region games aside from Piedmont. They lost to Hokes Bluff 35-0 last season, but this looks to be their best chance in several years to knock off their arch-rivals, and they'll have had a bye week to prepare. |
The Hokes Bluff Eagles' fast start to the season came to an abrupt end last week as they were shut out 24-0 by the Anniston Bulldogs. If there's any consolation at all to be had, it's that Anniston has the top defense in 4A Region 6 and is one of the top teams in all of 4A. The Eagles offense had performed very consistently up until that point, scoring 28, 28, and 35 points in their first three games. Glencoe won't have the same level of athleticism as Anniston, but they do have the ability to throw the ball, something that gave this Hokes Bluff defense some fits against both Anniston and White Plains. |
As we've discussed on this website and on the podcast before, it can be a big mental hurdle for teams to get over when they haven't beat a rival in a long time. I think that will be the biggest challenge Glencoe faces in this one, as the teams look pretty even on paper. This might be a heart pick, but give me the upset. |

during the 2025 football season.
Series:
Homewood and Mountain Brook have met 37 times on the field....
Mountain Brook holds a 22-15 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Comments: These are two familiar foes, having squared off 36 times previously. They don't play every year, but given how good Homewood was in the 2000s, it's quite remarkable that they've only beaten Mountain Brook twice since 1996, with the last coming in 2009. |
Homewood has a pretty balanced offense across the board. They have a three-headed rushing attack in Sophomore Reid Goldstein, Junior Jackson Chapleau, and Senior Davis Griffin. They have 600 rushing yards and 14 rushing TDs combined. Quarterback Kaleb Carson has thrown for nearly 1,000 yards and 12 TDs on the season. They've got two big-time interior linemen on the defensive side in Randall Jaquez and Dennis White Jr. Those two have combined for 5.5 sacks on the season for a defense that has yet to allow more than 8 points in a game and has given up just 22 points on the season. The closest game for the Patriots so far has been a 27-0 victory over Briarwood, and that's the only game in which they've scored fewer than 49 points. They've been pretty explosive through the air, so that could be the difference-maker. Homewood hasn't made it past the Quarterfinals since their last state championship in 2005. We'll find out this week if they'll be state championship contenders this season. |
Mountain Brook doesn't come in with the same kind of numbers as Homewood, but they've played a much tougher schedule. When your easiest of five games has been Demopolis, that's a sure sign of a high-quality schedule. Coach Yeager's squad held tough with Parker early in the season, but a loss to Pell City had many scratching their heads at the time. However, the Spartans got back on track by throttling Oxford last week 42-14. As always, Mountain Brook is a run-heavy team, which they do about 2/3 of the time. They have three players at or near the 300-yard mark on the ground in QB Cayden Hofbauer and RBs Stuart Andrews and Lawson McKnight. They currently rank 15th in scoring defense in 6A, but considering they're the only in-state school to hold Parker under 40 points (and under 30 points), that ranking is probably more than a bit deceiving. |
I expect this to be a defensive slugfest for sure, but it will be the first real test on the season for that vaunted Homewood defense. So far this week I've taken two double digit underdogs to pull off upsets. We've got Homewood as a 16-point favorite, which seems really high, so the upset is once again tempting. But in the words of Lee Corso, ''Not so fast my friend.'' Give me Homewood to finally knock off Mountain Brook. |

|
| Comments: What was a defensive battle last season, looks to be another defensive battle in the works. Parker lost badly to Carrollton from Georgia which is nothing to be ashamed of. That is a super team and nothing wrong with losing to them. Hoover on the other hand has started to slip up during the season, but bounced back and got a critical victory against Prattville. But Parker is much better than Prattville. |
Hoover is finding its stride like I said, and they have played top level defenses this season, including IMG Academy's defense which you could argue is the best defense in the entire country. But I like what I have seen from Dylan Reese so far this season. He has really taken the next step into being a great quarterback. I think Dylan Reese is the X factor for Parker this season. When he plays well, he can take this team back to a state title. |
I do think Parker will make another deep run in November. Hoover I am not sure still, while improvements have been made, I don't think they are better in this game. |
Give me the Thundering Herd to win close. |

Valley has quietly had a very nice season, with their only loss being an eight point loss to Central Clay County. Now Valley takes on a team they have dominated historically. My real question is if Valley can score with Bryson Riggins and Russell County. |

| Comments: You may be wondering, what on earth am I doing picking a game with a 17 point favorite? Well, I am happy you asked! You see Pleasant Grove has lost two games this season, but one of those was to McAdory, who is looking like a solid 6A team. |
The Oak Grove loss, I can not explain, that was very surprising. Now Pleasant Grove is very talented, and Anniston is as well, Anniston has played a tough schedule as well, and so far has lived up to the offseason hype. Can Anniston actually compete for the 4A north? I certainly think they can from what I have seen. |
Anniston has a lot of talent, and really good coaching. Being in the 4A north is much better for them rather than the south. Which sounds dumb, but remember they were a south team not long ago at all just before this last cycle of reclassification. |
Pleasant Grove will make the playoffs, and may even host a playoff game, but give me Anniston to win. |

| Comments: Well look at the game we have here. Addison has been off to an excellent start to the season. Good Hope has allowed 13 points in four games, I would say that is pretty good. |
This is looking like a title contending Addison team, and Good Hope is looking like a title contending 4A north team as well. Here is where the matchup comes down to. School size. 1A versus a 4A school. That feels like a lazy answer, however it is a big deal. Depth and size really comes into play when you have these types of matchups. |
Good Hope is also an excellent 4A school. I think Addison will have a fine season, and will be a late November playoff team, but this feels like a little bit of a jump in size and depth. |
