The teams have both won 2 games.
|
|
| Comments: Wenonah comes in 2-0 having not given up a single point this season. Granted, not the best competition thus far but that is still impressive. #1 Demazzia Taylor was a nightmare for Midfield hurting them with both his arm and his legs. |
Corner also comes in 2-0 having dispatched 3A power Winfield and steamrolling 4A Dora. CJ Brown leads a pretty solid Corner defense that will be tasked with slowing down the high octane Dragons offense. |
Corner has been on a solid run the last couple of years and I look for that to continue this season with another playoff berth but it won't continue Friday. The Dragons have too many weapons and are looking to avenge the 1 point loss last year. |

|
| Comments: Meek enters this contest at 1-1 but coming off a pretty big loss to Winston County 46-22. It was a tight game at half but Meek wasn't able to keep up in the second half being outscores 30-8. Evan McCay threw for two tds in the losing effort. |
Hackleburg comes in 1-0 and looking for their third straight region title. Cam Ingram paced the panthers with 154 yards on the ground and 3 TDs. Although the Panthers were stricken with the turnover bug early. |
The region is once again between these two and Addison. The winner gets an early leg up. Meek will need to take advantage of panthers miscues and control their dangerous run game. Until I see otherwise, this is still Hackleburg's region to lose. |

|
| Comments: The annual Battle for Madison is almost dead even with Bob Jones holding a 7-6 advantage but James Clemens is on a two game win streak. James Clemens enters the contest 1-0 and coming off a bye. New coach Juan Johnson, known for his offensive play calling, had the jets looking in midseason form with a high powered balanced attack against Gardendale. |
The Patriots come on 2-0 coming off a 50-28 win over Lee Huntsville. Rhys Dorsey came through with 3 catches for 83 yards and a td for Bob Jones. |
With the struggles of Florence and Austin, this game looks to establish a clear front runner for 7A R4. The Jets balanced offense attack coupled with Bob Jones propensity to give up some big plays equals a distinct advantage for the Jets. |

|
| Comments: West End is coming off a big non region win against Sand Rock last week bringing their record to 1-1. A game that saw Jaxon Hamby run for two TDs while throwing for three. |
Falkville is coming off a bye week and sits at 1-0. The defense shut down Vinemont while the offense, aided by the special teams, put up enough to win. I know Dillard played a lot in the second half so I am not sure of the status of Jacobs (the starting QB). |
This game will be much better than the previous years. The Patriots are much improved and can really score quickly. I like Falkville's defense making some timely stops. |

Thomasville holds a 6-4 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Comments: Thomasville won this one in blowout fashion last season, 34-0. But Southside Selma had the better season, winning 11 games and reaching the Semifinals for the first time in school history. |
Southside Selma lost some great players off of last year's team, but they've still got plenty of talent left to make another deep run. Junior WR Cedric Simmons is a potential game-breaker and currently holds an offer from Auburn. Amari Towns is a 3-Star Tight End and is committed to Purdue. Their defense wasn't terrible last year, allowing 21 ppg, but they gave up more than 30 per game in the playoffs. If this team can see even a minor improvement on the defensive side of the ball, there's no reason they can't win a state championship. |
Thomasville lost a lot from their team last year that started the season 11-0 before falling in the 2nd Round of the playoffs. It could be a bit of a rebuilding year for them, as they're replacing their top 2 RBs from last season, but this is always a heavy running team, so they're sure to have a healthy stable of backs that will step up. They come in at 1-1, having split games against their smaller rivals Leroy and Sweet Water. |
Thomasville always has a strong running game, so I expect them to put up some points. I'm just not sure that they'll be able to stop Southside Selma's potent offense. |

Series:
Opp and New Brockton have met 6 times on the field....
Opp holds a 5-1 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Comments: This is a corner of the state that doesn't often get a lot of coverage, so I try to cover this area a couple times a year. This was a really close game a year ago. |
With Opp's offense, you're going to see a lot of old school sets like the Pro Set and variation of the I-Formation. This lends itself to a strong running game, and they incorporate a lot of misdirections and delayed handoffs, but they also mix in a fair share of play action. The versatility of the offense makes it fun to watch in my opinion. They started 5-0 last season before losing four of their last six, so we'll see if they can finish the season stronger this year. |
New Brockton nearly pulled off a massive upset in this matchup last season, which would've been par for the course in this crazy region. They finished just 3-7 and missed the playoffs, but some close losses to Opp and Straughn suggest they may have been better than their record showed. They return an All-State linebacker in Bryant Crumpler along with 3-Star ATH Anthony Silar, and the Gamecocks started the season off with wins over Pike Liberal Arts and Slocomb, so a playoff appearance may be well within the realm of possibility for them this year. |
If last year was any indication, absolutely anything can happen in this region. With that said, Opp should be the better team overall on paper, so it's hard for me not to pick them. |

| Prediction: Opp 33, New Brockton 24 |

UMS-Wright holds a 17-4 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Comments: If you know anything about this area of the state, you'll know that most of the teams in the area are known for hard-hitting defenses and physical football. However, both of these offenses are averaging 30 ppg, so there's potential for some offensive fireworks in this one. |
For years under Terry Curtis, UMS-Wright was a powerhouse known for their suffocating defenses. Coach Curtis retired in the offseason after 8 state championships in 26 years, and his successor, Sam Williams, looks to keep the success going for the Bulldogs. They nearly pulled off what would have been a fairly significant upset in Week 1 over arch rival 6A St. Paul's, before taking down LeFlore last week. They typically haven't been known for their passing attack, but with 150 yards in the air last week and less than 100 yards rushing, this could be one of the most balanced they've had in several years. They've started the year off strong, and I could see this being a dark horse state championship contending team. |
B.C. Rain is off to an impressive 2-0 start this season with wins over a good Hillcrest Evergreen team and a comeback win last week over 7A Foley. Their top player is Sophomore receiver Darryl Blackmon Jr., who led the team last year in receiving yards and had 7 touchdown catches. They like to throw him a lot of screens and other quick passes to take advantage of his quick release off the line of scrimmage, but he has the ability to high point the ball in coverage as well. I expect them to have one of the better offenses in 5A Region 1, and the last playoff spot in the region will likely come down to them and Citronelle. |
I think both of these teams should be much improved over last season, which is what makes this such an interesting matchup. I really like both offenses, but I think I trust UMS-Wright's defense a little more. |

| Prediction: UMS-Wright 28, B.C. Rain 20 |

|
|
| Comments: Comments: This was a tight, low-scoring affair a season ago, ultimately won by Hewitt-Trussville 18-14, giving them their fifth straight win in the series. Expect another tight game, but this one could be much higher scoring. |
Hewitt-Trussville has had some pass-heavy offenses in the past, but this year they seem to be a run-heavy team. They ran for 343 yards to just 15 passing yards last week in a 56-7 win over a good 6A Gadsden City team. It's easy to see why they like running the ball with their stable of running backs. Delvecchio Alston is committed to Kentucky as a 3-Star and rushed for 8 TDs last season. Sophomore CJ Davis rushed for 7 TDs as a Freshman. The team also has a 3-Star WR in Dylan Cope, a Virginia commit, so they're sure to have a capable passing attack as well. Defensively, they return multiple All-State players, two of whom are Linebackers, so it's not a surprise that they've allowed just 7 total points through two games. |
Vestavia Hills lost two All-State players off a defense that was already pretty average last season, but they've shown out through two games this season. Last week they held Auburn, one of the preseason favorites in 7A, to just 14 points in a blowout victory 42-14. Most thought the Rebels were still rebuilding, so this was a result that sent shockwaves throughout the state. They may not have some of the top-end talent of other teams in 7A, but Coach Robert Evans has turned this into a consistent playoff program in the state's top class. |
These have been two of the hottest programs to start the season, and despite some big games, neither have been tested on the scoreboard. This game will tell us a lot about whether either team can challenge the likes of Thompson and Hoover. |

|
| Comments: Two programs that seem to be on the rise, and if it wasn't for one of the hardest regions in the entire country, they would likely be playoff teams. Now, both can make the playoffs, but it would certainly be a shock. |
Shane McComb has done a great job turning the program around, with many calling for his job after one season, he has quietly been building this program towards being more competitive. Prattville with Bobby Carr has been relatively quiet, and bounced back versus Stanhope Elmore last week, while Oak Mountain needed a legitimate Hail Mary versus Pelham to get the win. While I do think both programs are gaining momentum and that is awesome to see, I think one team is a little bit ahead of the other. |
I think Prattville will get the job done. I think they are just more talented at this point and will win this football game. While it will be closer than many might think, I think both teams will have very competitive seasons, and will hope in reclassification that they may have a new region. but for now I think Prattville just has more talent at the end of the day, and I think the Lions will prevail |

|
| Comments: Two programs who have both been on the rise these last few seasons. Trent Campbell has done an excellent job with Corner, taking them to new heights that the Yellow Jackets have never been to. |
Nicholas Howard has done a wonderful job with the Dragons getting them back into the playoffs and competing for a region title. Last season the Dragons got back into the postseason for the first time since 2017. Corner made it to the third round of the playoffs for the first time ever last season, and they have been playing football since 1946 so that is quite the accomplishment. |
Now looking at this season, both teams are off to a hot start, however there is something I have noticed. Corner's first two games were a lot more difficult games than Wenonah's. Spencer Unruh is still the star of the Yellow Jackets, and while the Dragons have yet to allow a point this season, I think that will change. |
I think Corner will win this game, and will win this game and continue to build towards another potential region title. |

|
| Comments: Two small schools out on the eastern part of the state. Not too much of a drive between these two so I expect a well attended football game. |
Now let's talk numbers. Both teams have lost games to upper classification foes, not much to be upset there. Loachapoka played a close game with Lee Scott, and Lanett lost on a walk-off field goal from Bullock County. Loachapoka has typically been pretty good these last few seasons, however the jump up to class 2A has been difficult on them. But this season it feels like they are going to get it turned around. |
Lanett, the same story, has been struggling but after last week's impressive win over Beulah, I think the Panthers will contend for a playoff spot. Loachapoka I think is just further along in getting used to 2A than Lanett is. I think they're the better team and will get the win. |
I think the winner of this game will likely finish second in the region, and it goes to Loachapoka |

|
| Comments: Two teams that are somewhat hard to get a read on. |
Keith is a team that every other year it feels like they have a nice team that makes it into the playoffs. It feels like that might be the case this year. Allen Brothers has done a good job with Verbena, every other year it feels like they have a really nice season. However this season might be a down year, as they struggled against Calhoun last week. |
Keith blew out Calhoun in the week prior. So I think that common opponents can tell us a lot when we get to these lower classifications when it is early in the season. This game holds a lot of weight early on, with the winner likely to host a playoff spot, or at least get better seeding as I think both will make the playoffs. |
But I am going with Keith as I think they are likely to finish second in this region. Give me Keith with the win. |
