Series:
Addison and Wadley have met 3 times on the field....
Wadley holds a 2-1 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Wadley comes in undefeated, seen as a favorite all year and having just knocked off a very good Hubbertville team by the count of 62 to 38 in a game in which Hubbertville led in the 3rd quarter. Jacquez Wilkes ran all over the Lions for 371 yards and 6 TD's. |
Addison comes in 12-1 and only having lost to 4A quarterfinalist Good Hope. They are outscoring their opponents by an average of 48 to 15 and just snuck by Marion Co to the tune of 28 to 22. The Bulldogs trailed at the half 16 to 8. Judah Wilkins found paydirt twice, once via a sweep and once via a TD catch. |
In the battle of the Bulldogs, there seems to be a clear favorite. Wadley's closest game all year was a 14 points win against 3A quarterfinalist Glenwood Academy. And while Addison did lose to a very good Good Hope team, it wasn't close. Wadley's only issue this year has been starting slow, but they haven't had an opponent yet that can stop then when they finally get going and I don't think they'll meet one week. |

Leroy holds a 3-1 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Stop me if you've heard this one before. Leroy is in the semifinals. The Bears come in undefeated at 13-0 and are averaging 48 ppg. They just knocked a very high powered McKenzie team 60 to 38. Leroy was able to move the ball with a balanced attack that featured Ja'Kavien Collins rushing for 3 TD's. |
Maplesville also comes in undefeated and having only given up 27 points all year. They've given up 0 thus far in the playoffs. Reminds of some of the old Clay County and Hazlewood defenses. The Red Devils outgained Southern Choctaw in the previous round 357 to 51. |
Leroy is about as consistent as they come and if there is one team in the south who can give Maplesville a game, then it's probably Leroy, but things really have to bounce their way. This Red Devils defense is something special. Keep in mind out of the 27 points they have given up this year, Fyffe had 6 and Isabella had 7, two very good offensive teams. |

Bayside Academy holds a 4-1 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Southside Selma comes in undefeated 13-0 and putting up big numbers all year. Their lowest offensive output all year was 22 against Thomasville, other than that it was 32 against Dadeville in the opening round. The Panthers put a stop to a very good Glenwood team last week 34 to 21. A game that they pretty much controlled from the outset. |
Bayside Academy comes in with only 1 loss on the season and that was to 4A power St Michael 41 to 10, which believe it or not is one of the lowest point totals for St Michael all year. They're coming off an impressive 30 to 13 victory against Montgomery Academy, a game they trailed 13 to 7 at the half. The Admirals intercepted 3 passes in the win. |
These teams met last year in the quarterfinals where SS pulled off a 26 to 24 victory. I see these teams as equally matched, so I expect another battle. Bayside may not have the explosiveness of SS, not many do, but they do play very solid defense. I think it could go either way. |

|
| Comments: Piedmont is another undefeated team still left in these playoffs, pushing their record to 13-0 with a 28 to 20 win over Gordo in the quarters. Quarterback Cole Austin led the way with 90 rushing yards and three rushing TD's. |
Mars Hill also comes in undefeated and having knocked off multiple higher class playoff teams during the season. They are coming off a big blowout of a very good Geraldine team 42 to 0 in the quarters. The Panthers led by 28 in the first quarter. Jaxon Penn had three TD's in the first quarter and finished the game with 182 yards on 9 carries. |
All year long I thought only one team in the North could play with Mars Hill and that team was the Piedmont Bulldogs. That being said, this Panther team is just firing on all cylinders. I can see a scenario where this game gets out of hand. |

|
| Comments: Comments: It's time for Part 2, or maybe you could call it Part 4, of this budding South Alabama rivalry, and for the second year in a row, the rematch comes with a spot to the state championship game on the line. |
Everyone knows about Gunner Rivers and the St. Michael passing offense by now, but their rushing attack may be the most potent element of the highest-scoring offense in Class 4A. The Cardinals average more than 46 points per game. We said it before the season started, and it has proven true-the only way a Class 4A team is going to beat Jackson is by outscoring them, and St. Michael is probably the only team with the ability to do that, as shown in their first matchup. |
It was considered quite the upset when St. Michael beat Jackson to win their region championship. There's no question that Jackson is the most talented team in Class 4A, and might have a claim to be the most talented team regardless of classification. If anything is to be their undoing, it will likely be turnovers. QB Landon Duckworth is one of the best QBs in the state, but he has thrown 3 interceptions in a game twice this year, once in the regular season loss to St. Michael, and once in the playoffs a couple weeks ago against Handley. If they can hold onto the ball, they'll be able to ride RB EJ Crowell to another championship. |
St. Michael had no answer for EJ Crowell in the first matchup, and I don't expect them to now. However, the Cardinals were able to jump on the Aggies early and hang on for the win. I expect a tighter game start to finish this time, and I think St. Michael's experience in closer games will pay dividends down the stretch. |

|
|
| Comments: Comments: Get ready for a physical game here. This is gonna be one of those games where you've got to bring your big-boy pads and have a lot of ice ready, because these are two of the most physical teams you'll find. |
Watching Plainview's offense is a lesson in what great offensive line play looks like. Every play results in a sea of defenders' bodies on the ground. But they don't look like your typical physical run-heavy team. They run mostly out of the shotgun and incorporate a lot of Read Options and other wrinkles to keep the defense off balance. They've got a lot of size everywhere from the line to their skill guys, which makes them a difficult matchup for most teams. It's important to play your best football in November, and they're looking better and better every week. |
If any team can match up with the size and physicality of Plainview, it's Anniston. They might be the only team in 4A that will have a size advantage on Plainview at the line of scrimmage, with three guys over 300 lbs. Multiple of their linemen will be playing on Saturdays. They've got some elite skill athletes too, and QB Damon Pope is as electric as they come. There may not be another QB in the state with his ability to extend plays with his legs. |
This game is going to come down to discipline. Anniston has the advantage in size and athleticism, but they'll have to remain disciplined on defense. Plainview throws a lot on a defense in terms of staying with your assignment, so if Anniston isn't prepared for it the Bears will run all over them. I think Plainview has some success, but Pope will be the difference. |

Saraland holds a 2-1 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Comments: This should be a great battle between two of the state's top coaches in Saraland's Jeff Kelly and Benjamin Russell's Kirk Johnson. Reaching the semifinals is business as usual for Saraland, but this is Benjamin Russell's first semifinal appearance since 2015. |
For the fourth straight year, and the sixth time in the last eight years, Saraland finds themselves in the Class 6A semifinals. QB Jamison Roberts has been one of the top QBs in the state this year and should be the top QB returning in 6A next year. He has an incredible 75% completion percentage to go with 3,000 yards and 50+ total TDs. They've got some impressive players on defense, including DE Blair Evans, LB Demaron Dunklin, and MLB Ayindae Pugh. Spain Park had this team on the ropes a couple weeks ago, but that's really the only time they've been tested all year. |
I think we've been underrating Benjamin Russell this year. Their lone loss on the year was by five points in Week 1 to Opelika. At the time, it was seen as a respectable loss, but now that Opelika will be playing for the 7A State Championship, that loss looks even better. Coach Kirk Johnson has proven to be one of the truly elite coaches in this state, coming in and elevating Benjamin Russell from a solid program into a state championship-caliber program in his first year. Their QB Kingston Preyear is just a Sophomore and is already one of the top QBs in 6A with nearly 3,000 yards and 32 TDs, so look for this team to stay in contention over the next couples of years, although elite playmaking receiver Cederian Morgan will graduate in the spring. |
This is such an elite coaching matchup between the two winningest coaches in the state over the past few seasons, and I'm sure there will be plenty of eyes on this one. I think Saraland has the advantage in talent, but it's not as significant as some might think. Benjamin Russell has been great at forcing turnovers this year, and if they can force a couple of mistakes from Saraland's offense, they could make this a game. |

Muscle Shoals and Clay-Chalkville have met 4 times on the field....
Clay-Chalkville holds a 3-1 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Comments: These two teams have become pretty familiar with each other in recent years, as this is the third straight year they'll be facing off in the 2nd Round or later. |
Muscle Shoals might have the best defense in the state in any classification. They haven't allowed more than 17 points in a game this season and allow just 7.6 points per game. What surprises me most about this team on film is how much speed they have. Their running backs are tough to get on the ground, and just one broken or missed tackle and they have the breakaway speed to take it all the way. Although most of their explosive plays the past couple of weeks seem to come on the ground, they've got a solid passing attack that compliments their run game well. |
It's hard to find something Clay-Chalkville doesn't do well. They knocked off Thompson once again in the regular season, and the only team other than the Warriors to score more than 17 points on the Cougar defense was Jackson-Olin in what seems to have been an anomaly of a defensive performance. The Cougars always seem to be adaptable on offense-some years they throw the ball a ton, other years they'll lean on the run more-and this year they seem to be relying on the rushing attack more. They'll likely have a second player reach the 1,000-yard mark in rushing yards this week, as QB Aaron Frye sits at 985 yards to go with the 1,365 yards of RB Joshua Woods. Those two have combined for 38 TDs on the ground. They also have a plethora of great receivers, led by Corey Barber, who has 64 catches for almost 1,100 yards and 14 TDs. |
This could quite possibly be the best team Muscle Shoals has ever had, and I'll give them a better chance than a lot of people will to win this game. However, they knocked Clay-Chalkville out of the playoffs last year in the 2nd Round, and I think the desire for revenge will be too strong. |

|
| Comments: Well it has been nearly 30 years, but welcome back to the State Semi-Finals Scottsboro! What a fun season it has been full of ups and downs. Jacobi Edmondson is the star running back for Scottsboro this season and has helped them to their first semi-final appearance since the Clinton administration. Taygan Harrison has been the force on the defensive side of the ball for the Wildcats, and even helping on the offensive side playing on the offensive line. |
Special teams are not forgotten either, as kicker Cole Raeuchle has quite the leg, and went 3-3 including the game winning field goal against the unbeaten Fairview Aggies to win 16-14. |
Moody outside of two games against two schools much larger than them has been mostly unstoppable. Josiah Dozier and Jake Lowery are part of the reason for the Blue Devils' run for a state title. Lowery has thrown for nearly 3,000 yards and 13 of his 33 touchdown passes have been to Dozier. Le'Kamren Meadows has rushed for over a 1,000 yards as well to help lead this potent offense. The sack trio of Cam Mallory, Henry Smith, and Dezron Mobley have helped lead the Blue Devils defense with star Ba'Roc Willis racking up 8 sacks as well. |
While Scottsboro has had a fine season, I think this is a very bad matchup for them. Moody can score in a hurry, and unless Scottsboro forces turnovers, and makes this a rock fight, I could see this one getting out of hand quickly. Not to say it is impossible, but very unlikely. I think Moody gets out early, and rolls to a victory to punch their ticket back to Birmingham. |

|
|
| Comments: Coosa Christian came into the season as one of the hottest topics of discussion. In both good ways and bad, the Conquers came into the season with a target firmly on their back. However, under the guidance of Rush Propst, Coosa Christian has rolled through all 2A competition, with their only losses coming to a very good Georgia school, and Pell City, who is nearly quadruple their size and made the 6A playoffs. Kylen Johnson is the leading running back of the team for Coosa Christian. |
In their win over Tuscaloosa Academy, Johnson had 43 carries for 247 yards and two touchdowns to advance to the state semi-finals. Mac Long is the star quarterback of the team, and has helped guide Coosa Christian to new heights as this program continues to make history. On defense, the star player to watch for is, Kylen Johnson! As he plays both ways and is a heck of a cornerback. With 9 interceptions and counting, it is best for quarterbacks to stay far away from his side of the field. |
Pisgah has had a great season, when many thought they would be down this year. The Eagles have once again found themselves in the state semi-finals, but still looking to make it back to the title game which they made in 2000. I have watched both of these teams, and there is more consistently to Coosa Christian than I have seen with Pisgah. Now when Pisgah plays their best game, they are a very good football team. |
I have seen Rush Propst teams in the playoffs, and they are very tough to beat, and I think Coosa Christian is going to win this game. I think they are the better team, and it will show. |

Reeltown holds a 8-7 edge in the games played.
|
|
| Comments: Reeltown had the target planted firmly on their back as they are the defending 2A state champions, and so far only one team has bested them that was a fellow 2A team, that team was Lanett. Lanett has flown under everyone's radar, all the way up till last week when they crushed what was many people's picks to win the state title in Luverne, 35-16. |
Reeltown has the star quarterback in JaMarkius Smith, alongside with some young skill position players who are starting to find their stride at the right time. Now Smith did not play in the Rebels 20-19 loss to Lanett earlier this season, would that have made a difference? I would like to think so. |
But Lanett is a very physical team, which Reeltown has struggled with in the past when I have watched them. But I do not think Lanett has the offensive firepower to beat Reeltown twice. I think the Rebels are starting to get the reputation like some of the great powers get. As long as they are in 2A they have been elite. In fact, excluding the 2 years they were in 3A in 2020, and 2021, in 2A competition the last time they did not make it past the second round was 2018. |
Lanett has been a great story and I think this game will be razor close, but I think championship DNA wins this game by the thinnest of margins. |

|
| Comments: I think back in October when these two teams played, we all said that these two would find themselves in Late November. Let's start with Williamson. Both teams have Saturday level players on their teams, especially on defense. The Lions have linebacker Ellis McGaskin who is committed to Notre Dame. Cornerback Jermaine McCree is committed to Troy and Jaylen Scott who is committed to Auburn both playing on defense alongside many others who have offers to play at the next level. |
Many of the star defensive players like Scott and McGaskin are juniors and will be back next season. Offensively has been just as good, and leading the way is star quarterback AJ Dinkins. I have personally really enjoyed watching Dinkins play quarterback. He is a really talented quarterback. This team has just beaten teams badly all season long, except for one, their arch rival the Vigor Wolves. |
Speaking of which, Vigor has their own Saturday players on their team. Jabarrius Garror is an edge rusher junior committed to Alabama. Sammy Dunn is the star senior quarterback for the Wolves and is committed to play at Army. Dylan Jackson is a senior receiver committed to Alabama A&M. They two have a ton of talent committed and gaining interest to play at the next level. I have been back and forth on this rematch since the final whistle blew in their first matchup. |
I think it will once again be a defensively stalemate, and I expected Vigor to take that next step, and they have. The problem is, it feels like Williamson has gotten better since their last matchup. I might as well flip a coin because they feel very evenly matched. I think Williamson actually wins this game. I just think they are a team of destiny, and they will find a way to win and book their date to play Moody in Birmingham. |
