Round Three of the 2024 Playoffs Tidbits & Records

The 7A Super 7 Championship game is set.  The 1A-6A classes play semi-final games this week. Here are a few tidbits from the third round.

   *   We will have all the usual things posted throughout the weekend and next week.  Be sure to catch the podcast and the previews of every upcoming semi-final game.

   *   The AISA teams have concluded their season with three championship games held in Montgomery last Thursday.  Chambers Academy won their second title in a row with a 45-12 win over Bessemer Academy.

   *   Lowndes Academy saw their 30 game winning streak come to an end against South Choctaw Academy.  Head coach Stacy Luker picked up his seventh state championship as his Rebels knocked off the Rebels of Lowndes Academy 14-7.

   *   Cornerstone Christian won the 8-Man football championship in the AISA with a convincing 52-12 victory over Macon-East Academy.  It was their second consecutive title.

   *   Undefeated teams are getting fewer as the weeks progress. Six undefeated teams lost over the weekend. The remaining undefeated teams:
       7A - None
       6A - Oxford (13-0), Saraland (12-0)
       5A - Catholic Montgomery (12-0)
       4A - West Morgan (13-0)
       3A - Piedmont (13-0)
       2A - Highland Home (13-0)
       1A - Wadley (11-0)
AISA - South Choctaw Academy (13-0)

   *   We had some great games played Friday night and will have a bunch of great matchups this week.  Here are some notes from last week.

   *  There were several major upsets this week.  The biggest was Piedmont defeating Fyffe  after entering the game as a 7 point underdog according to the AHSFHS Power Ratings.

   *   The 7A Super 7 teams are set as Thompson took care of Enterprise 31-7 and Central Phenix City knocked out Hoover 17-7. This will be the fourth meeting between the two schools all coming in a championship game. Central defeated Thompson 21-19 last year.  This will be Thompson's seventh straight appearance in the title game.

   *   In 6A Oxford knocked off Ft. Payne 28-26 for their tenth win over a playoff team this season. Quite remarkable.

   *   Some teams we expected to be around in December keep winning.  Jackson took care of Tallassee 41-10, Cherokee County beat Brooks 21-14, Saraland easily defeated Spain Park 45-19, Parker beat Muscle Shoals 35-10, Catholic got past Central Clay County 21-9, Moody rolled Ramsay 49-7 and Reeltown beat Cottonwood 42-20.

   *   A few teams are here who were not on anyone's radar in August advanced to the semifinals.  Southside Selma came back to defeat Bayside Academy 26-24 and Sulligent upset Winston County 38-12.

   *   Teams reaching the semifinals who have never played in the fourth round previously include:  Moody, Southside Selma and St. Michael.

   *   Including those two schools, teams who have never won a semifinal game:  Houston Academy, Parker, West Morgan and Highland Home.

   *   Moody is the only team who has never hosted a semifinal game but will this week.

   *   Teams with great home records in the semifinals who will be hosting a playoff game this week: Cherokee County (4-0), Reeltown (5-2) and Mars Hill (2-0).

   *   Here are a few teams with semifinal game experience with their record in this round: Cherokee County 6-1, Reeltown 10-4, Vigor 7-4, Leeds 5-1, Elba 7-1, Piedmont 7-4 and Maplesville 6-13.

   *   The best semifinal matchups I would most like to see; Oxford (13-0) at Parker (12-1), Vigor (12-1) at Catholic Montgomery (12-0), West Morgan (13-0) at Cherokee County (12-1) and Piedmont (13-0) at Mars Hill (12-1).

   *   The current longest winning streak among the AHSAA schools now belongs to Catholic Montgomery with a string of 27 straight victories.  The Knights took care of Central Clay County 21-9.  Lowndes Academy in the AISA had their 30 game streak broken in the AISA Championship game loss.

   *   Columbia now holds onto the longest losing streak at 91 straight contests.  They now hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.

   *   The Saraland Spartans, ranked #1 in 6A, are rolling along with 33 consecutive home wins.  The Spartans defeated Spain Park 45-19 last week.  They will not have another game on their home turf until next season.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 28 consecutive road games. The Knights will not play another game on the road until 2025.  The neutral site Super 7 games do not count as road contests if they are able to get to Birmingham.

   *   The Sulligent Blue Devils also made history this week by winning the 500th game in school history.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
