Week Eleven Tidbits & Records

The playoffs are here. The hunt for that elusive Blue Map begins in a few day. Here are a few tidbits from the eleventh week of football action.

   *   Be sure to catch our podcast this Sunday as we will be posting a new episode covering all the action with Kurt, TP and myself.

   *   Scoring averages will be posted for each classification and every team on Sunday along with the AHSFHS Power Ratings for all teams and our very own Power Ratings Top Ten for each classification on Monday.

   *   Follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions.  You can also try your luck at beating them in the forums on Wednesday.

   *   The final week of the regular season saw many teams taking the week off in preparations for the upcoming playoffs. There were still a few great games played this past week.

   *  Muscle Shoals came from behind to defeat #6 Austin 29-22.  Baker and Vigor went at it Friday night in a great game with the Hornets coming out on top 10-9.

   *  #4 West Morgan got past Deshler 35-34 in double overtime to claim a region championship. Also in 4A St. Michael beat UMS-Wright 35-28.

   *  #4 Fairview capped off a perfect regular season with a convincing win over undefeated Good Hope 48-21 in a cross-classification contest.

   *  There were several major upsets this week.  The biggest was Woodlawn getting the best of playoff bound Center Point 32-20 after entering the game as a 23 point underdog for the Colonels fist win of the season. Briarwood defeated McAdory 55-35 as a 17 point underdog.

   *   We usually call out the high scoring offense of the week so here goes. Last week only 23 teams scored at least 50 points.  They were led by Berry Fayette who put up 78 points on Victory Christian in a high scoring affair 78-47.  That is a lot of offense!

   *   There were a few cross-state games this week. Overall Alabama schools have a record of 28-23 against other states following four weeks of action.  They are 5-9 against Georgia, 18-11 versus Florida and 4-0 versus Tennessee.  They are also 1-2 against an opponent from Mississippi and 0-1 against Texas after Permian beat Bessemer City recently.  We are only counting the AHSAA schools.

   *  Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 175 consecutive polls dating back to the 2009 season.  The Red Devils are the #5 team in 3A as they closed out the regular season with an open date.

   *   The current longest winning streak among the AHSAA schools now belongs to Catholic Montgomery with a string of 24 straight victories.  The Knights also took the week off in preparations for the post season.  Lowndes Academy in the AISA has a 28 game streak going after defeating Morgan Academy 44-12.

   *   Columbia now holds onto the longest losing streak at 91 straight contests.  They now hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.  They kept the game close against Hazel Green before losing 24-14.

   *   Catholic Montgomery has a streak of 40 consecutive region wins.  The Knights wrapped up another perfect regular season by finishing 9-0.

   *   Barbour County had lost 66 consecutive region games but the losing streak came to an end when Pike Liberal Arts had to forfeit a game to Jaguars a few weeks ago.  With that change Columbia now holds onto the longest region losing streak at 55 games.

   *  The #1 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won 43 straight regular season games.

   *   The Saraland Spartans, ranked #1 in 6A, are rolling along with 30 consecutive home wins.  The Spartans also did not play this past week.  If they play another road contest it will be at least the second round of the playoffs.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 27 consecutive road games. The Knights next road trip will be later in the playoffs.

   *   The Fyffe Red Devils extended their streak of consecutive games scoring once again this past week.  They are currently sitting on a string of 330 games without being shutout.  T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Roland Jones Jr., the head football coach at Brantley, reached the 150 win mark in what will likely be his last game as the head coach at the school as he earlier announced his retirement.  His record stands at 150-50.  What a great job at Brantley.
