2026 Preview

Decatur Heritage Christian finished the 2025 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Decatur Heritage Christian just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 2A region eight with a 1-4 region record.        The defense allowed a team record 510 points last season. The Eagles hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 7-3 record in 2024.        Decatur Heritage Christian was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Eagles want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.4 points a game.        Decatur Heritage Christian struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 51.0 points a game.        Since 2010, Decatur Heritage Christian has gone a combined 108-69. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class A over the past sixteen seasons.        Over the past 16 seasons, Decatur Heritage Christian has managed to compile a record of 108-69. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class A and 84th in the AHSAA. Head Coach:        The Eagles are led by head coach Rich Dutton who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Decatur Heritage Christian. The Eagles have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Dutton. Over the course of his career, Coach Dutton's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times . Season Outlook:        The Decatur Heritage Christian Eagles will play in Class A region four during the 2026 season.        The Eagles have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class A. Their opponents had a combined record of 55-40 last season. That ranks 4th in Class A and 71st in the AHSAA.        The Eagles enter the 2026 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.        During the off season the AHSAA decided to separate the public and private schools in Alabama into two different divisions. This is likely a two year experiment that will be tweaked over the next few years. It will make for interesting conversations during that time.        A 1-9 season last year was the worst in the schools short history and something they would rather forget as fall practice begins in August.     The Eagles will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. After just a single win last year, Decatur Heritage Christian will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season.

Season Opener:
       The Eagles open the 2026 season on the road against non-region opponent Donoho on Friday, August 28 at Lentz Field. Last year the Donoho Falcons finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in sixth place in Class 1A region six. The Falcons closed out the regular season with a loss to Cedar Bluff by a score of 35-19.

       Decatur Heritage Christian and Donoho have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 1-4-0 record against the Falcons. They last met in 2019 with Decatur Heritage Christian winning by a score of 20-2.
