2026 Preview

Houston County finished the 2025 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Houston County finished eighth in Class 2A region two with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.        The Lions last playoff victory came during the 2004 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The Lions hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 6-5 record in 2024.        Houston County was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Lions want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.2 points a game.        Houston County struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 47.0 points a game.        Since 2010, the Houston County football program has struggled with a record of 43-120.        Over the past 25 seasons, Houston County has managed to compile a record of 102-159. Their 39.0% winning percentage ranks 47th in Class 2A and 286th in the AHSAA. Coaching Change:      Tanner Harris  leaves Houston County after just two seasons following a 1-9 season in 2025. The Lions won the first game of the season before losing the next nine. Coach Harris' first team at Houston County looked promising with a 6-5 record and a playoff spot. The Lions will now be in search of their fifth head coach in eight years. They have not won a playoff game since the 2004 football season. 2026 Head Coach:     BJ Chitty  was a Northview High football standout who had a strong career on the Troy football team. He was hired to replace Coach Harris at Houston County in December. This will be his first shot as a head football coach. Season Outlook:        The Houston County Lions will play in Class 2A region two during the 2026 season.        Houston County will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season.        The Lions enter the 2026 season in the middle of a 9 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.            This season, the Lions will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two.

Season Opener:
       The Lions open the 2026 season at home against non-region opponent Ashford on Friday, August 21 at L.F. Tillery Field. Last year the Ashford Yellow Jackets finished with an overall record of 7-3 and in third place in Class 4A region two. The Yellow Jackets lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Jackson by a score of 34-0.

       Houston County and Ashford have met a total of 67 times on the football field. The Lions have a 21-44-2 record against the Yellow Jackets. They last met in 2021 with Houston County winning by a score of 50-26.
