 2023 Preview 


       Williamson completed the 2022 season with a 6-5 record. With their 4-4 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region one, the Lions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Williamson's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Charles Henderson by a score of 20-16.

       The defense was very stingy last season as Williamson ranked 20th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 13.3 points a game.

       Williamson was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Lions want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.4 points a game.

       Since 2010, Williamson has gone a combined 58-79. Their 42.3% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 5A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Williamson has managed to compile a record of 149-130. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 5A and 163rd in the AHSAA.




       The Lions are led by head coach Antonio Coleman who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 6-5 record in his first season at Williamson. The Lions saw improvement from a 5-6 record the season before coach Coleman arrived. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Coleman.

       Coach Coleman has the Lions headed in the right direction. Can he continue to build on last years success? Time will tell. At times last year the defense was as good as any in the state but the offense will need improvement to be competitive for a playoff spot in a very tough region.

       The Lions have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region one this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2016 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2023.

      

      Taijh Overton will lead the defense this season after collecting 118 total tackles last season.

       The Lions open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Mary Montgomery on Friday, August 25 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Last year the Mary Montgomery Vikings finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in fourth place in Class 7A region one. The Vikings lost in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs to Central Phenix City by a score of 58-7.

       Williamson and Mary Montgomery have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Lions have a 5-3-0 record against the Vikings. They last met in 2022 with Williamson winning by a score of 21-20.

      

       The Lions return 5A All-State Junior linebacker Yusef Clark. He was named to the second team last season. The Lions also return sophomore defensive back Jermaine McCree. He was named to the second team.

Bart Starr received coaching from Kentucky great Babe Parilli his senior season at Sidney Lanier in hopes of joining Bear Bryant at Kentucky. He had to settle for Alabama.
