 2023 Preview 


       Waterloo completed the 2022 season with a 4-5 record. Last year Waterloo just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region eight with a 3-4 region record.

       Since 2010, Waterloo has gone a combined 44-89. Their 33.1% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 17 seasons, Waterloo has managed to compile a record of 61-108. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 1A and 312nd in the AHSAA.




       The Cougars are led by head coach Jeremiah Stricklin who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 4-5 record in his first season at Waterloo. The Cougars saw improvement from a 3-7 record the season before coach Stricklin arrived. The Cougars have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Stricklin.

       The Cougars could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region eight this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Waterloo missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2023.

       The Cougars open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Brilliant on Friday, August 25 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the Brilliant Tigers finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in ninth place in Class 1A region five. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to South Lamar by a score of 41-0.

       Waterloo and Brilliant have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 5-7-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2022 with Waterloo winning by a score of 53-8.
