 2023 Preview

Thompson completed the 2022 season with a 11-3 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 7A region three, the Warriors earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. The Warriors reeled off four straight playoff wins to claim the Class 7A State Championship by defeating Auburn at the Alabama Super Seven 49-24 in Auburn.

The Warriors lost as many games as in any season since 2016.

The defense was very stingy last season as Thompson ranked 18th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 12.9 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Warriors have Finished 24-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Thompson has gone a combined 93-58. Their 61.6% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 7A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Thompson has managed to compile a record of 151-124. Their 55.0% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 7A and 141st in the AHSAA.

The Warriors are led by head coach Mark Freeman who is entering his ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 83-18 over the past eight seasons at Thompson. Under his direction the Warriors have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Freeman. Coach Freeman has won four state championships at Thompson, the last coming in 2022. His 247 wins rank 10th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Freeman's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-one times and won twelve region championships. He has a 54-11 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Freeman won six state championships prior to arriving at Thompson, the last coming in 2013 at Spanish Fort.

What else do the Warriors have to prove? After four consecutive championships Thompson will be out for number five in 2023. Of that we can be certain.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Thompson has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Warriors enter the season with expectations of not only a region crown but will be contending for a trip to the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region three and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the North in the Class 7A title game. The Warriors have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2016 and this year should be no exception.

Only a 9th grader, QB Trent Seaborn will be returning after completing 105 of 149 passes for 1,177 yards last season along with 15 touchdowns.

AJ Green will be back this season at running back after rushing for 1,238 yards and 17 TDs in 2022.

Receiver Deuce Oliver will also be returning this season after catching 47 passes good for 508 yards and 3 TDs as a junior last season.

The Warriors open the 2023 season on a neutral field against non-region opponent Opelika on Friday, August 25 at Cramton Bowl. Last year the Opelika Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in sixth place in Class 7A region two.

This will be the second meeting between Thompson and Opelika on the football field. The Warriors have a 1-0-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in with

Thompson lost 7A All-State  offensive lineman Stanton Ramil to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates defensive lineman Peter Woods and linebacker Seth Hampton.

The Warriors return 7A All-State Junior defensive back Anquon Fegans. He was named to the first team last season. The Warriors also return Senior running back AJ Green. He was named to the second team.
