 2023 Preview

Lexington completed the 2022 season with a 9-3 record. Last year Lexington captured the region eight title and a number one seed in the Class 2A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Golden Bears since the 2009 season. Lexington reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Tuscaloosa Academy by a score of 23-20.

The Golden Bears won as many games as in any season since 2009. The 471 points scored by the Golden Bears last year were a team record in a single season.

Since 2010, Lexington has gone a combined 68-73. Their 48.2% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Lexington has managed to compile a record of 139-135. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 2A and 174th in the AHSAA.

The Golden Bears will be under the direction of new head football coach Blake Killen as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach Killen was the head coach at Randolph School from 2018-2020. He served as defensive coordinator at Randolph from 2015-2018. Prior to coaching at Randolph Coach Killen coached at Columbia high school for 1 year and his alma mater Lexington. Over the course of his career, Coach Killen's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time .

The Golden Bears are considered one of the favorites for the region eight championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

The Golden Bears open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Colbert Heights on Friday, August 25 at McMeans Stadium. Last year the Colbert Heights Wildcats finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 3A region eight. The Wildcats ended last season on a positive note with a win over Decatur Heritage Christian by a score of 20-13 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Lexington and Colbert Heights have met a total of 31 times on the football field. The Golden Bears have a 19-12-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2022 with Lexington winning by a score of 34-0.
