 2023 Preview

Hewitt-Trussville completed the 2022 season with a 8-4 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 7A region three, the Huskies earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Hewitt-Trussville reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Hoover by a score of 28-11.

Since 2010, Hewitt-Trussville has gone a combined 99-49. Their 66.9% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 7A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Hewitt-Trussville has managed to compile a record of 179-101. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 7A and 67th in the AHSAA.

The Huskies are led by head coach Josh Floyd who is entering his tenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 73-31 over the past nine seasons at Hewitt-Trussville. Under his direction the Huskies have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Floyd. The win total includes 73 wins in Alabama and 99 victories from outside the state.

Playing in the toughest region against two of the best teams in 7A makes every game important for the Huskies. Look for Coach Floyd and his staff to have them ready for another playoff run in 2023. The Huskies return nine starters on offense and six on defense. They must replace 2 SEC players on defense, must replace kicker and punter.

Key returning players on defense include; DL Tyrell Averhart, DB Michael Igbinoghene, DB Riggs Dunn, DB Gavin Williams, DE Ayden Moore and DE Drew Ollis. Key newcomers this fall will be OL/DL Mason Holloway, WR Dylan Cope, CB Caden Ali, LB Parker Floyd, RB Deuce Alston, RB James Kelly and LB Owen Robinson.

The Huskies should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage.

QB Peyton Floyd completed 195 of 278 passes for 2,413 yards last season along with 25 touchdowns. He also ran for another 726 yards and 16 TDs.

Jaqson Melton will be back this season at running back after rushing for 778 yards and 5 TDs in 2022. Receiver Jadon Loving 54 receptions - 613 yards and 5 TDs and KaDarius Barnes - 36 receptions 500 yards 6 TDs.

The offensive line will be led by seniors Kade Martin, Braden Valdez, Trevor Pruet and TE Donovan Price who caught 27 passes for 338 Yards and 3 TDs.

The Huskies open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Central Phenix City on Friday, August 25 at Hewitt-Trussville Stadium. Last year the Central Phenix City Red Devils finished with an overall record of 10-3 and in first place in Class 7A region two. The Red Devils lost in the semi-finals round of the Class 7A playoffs to Auburn by a score of 14-13.

Hewitt-Trussville and Central Phenix City have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Huskies have a 0-2-0 record against the Red Devils. They last met in 2022 with Central Phenix City winning by a score of 37-21.

Hewitt-Trussville lost 7A All-State  defensive lineman Hunter Osborne to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates defensive back Rickey Gibson, kicker Riley Rigg and defensive lineman Tyrell Averhart.

The Huskies return 7A All-State Senior quarterback Peyton Floyd. He was named to the first team last season. The Huskies also return Senior offensive lineman Donovan Price. He was named to the second team.
