 2023 Preview 


       Hartselle completed the 2022 season with a 12-1 record. The Tigers cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Hartselle captured the region seven title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-0 record. Hartselle lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Mountain Brook team by a score of 49-30.

       The Tigers won as many games as in any season since 2011. The 537 points scored by the Tigers last year were a team record in a single season.

       The high-scoring Hartselle offense ranked 22nd in the AHSAA. They averaged 41.3 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Tigers have Finished 22-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Hartselle has gone a combined 116-39. Their 74.8% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Hartselle has finished a combined 209-85. Their 71.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 6A and 31st in the AHSAA. The Tigers have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time.




       The Tigers are led by head coach Bryan Moore who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 29-6 over the past three seasons at Hartselle. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Moore. Over the course of his career, Coach Moore's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times and won four region championships.

       The Tigers will return three players on the offensive side of the ball in 2023. Landon Blackwood will take over the quarterbacking duties when the season opens. They will need to replace all their productive wide receivers but expectations are high in Hartselle as always.

       The Tigers enter the 2023 season riding a 23 game regular season winning streak. Hartselle has won 15 consecutive region games. They have won 7 straight games on their home turf at J.P. Cain Stadium.

       While most teams rebuild during the off season, Hartselle has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Tigers are considered one of the favorites for the region seven championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

      Ri Fletcher will be back this season at running back after rushing for 1,306 yards and scoring 18 TDs in 2022. He accounted for 2,124 all-purpose yards and scored 24 TDs.

      Jake Haynes will lead the defense this season after collecting 120 total tackles last season. Peyton Steele added another 111 tackles.

       The Tigers open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Austin on Friday, August 25 at Austin Football Field. Last year the Austin Black Bears finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in first place in Class 7A region four. The Black Bears lost in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs to Vestavia Hills by a score of 52-10.

       Hartselle and Austin have met a total of 57 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 32-24-1 record against the Black Bears. They last met in 2022 with Hartselle winning by a score of 45-17.

       Hartselle lost 6A All-State  offensive lineman Reid Ellis to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

       The Tigers return 6A All-State Senior athlete Ri Fletcher. He was named to the first team last season.

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
