 2023 Preview

Fyffe completed the 2022 season with a 15-0 record. Last year Fyffe captured the region seven title and a number one seed in the Class 2A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. The Red Devils reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 2A State Championship by defeating B.B. Comer at the Alabama Super Seven 40-28 in Auburn.

No team at Fyffe ever won more games in a season than the fifteen victories last year. The Red Devils hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Benefield saw improvement as they won fifteen games following a 10-2 record in 2021.

The high-scoring Fyffe offense ranked 3rd in the AHSAA. They averaged 46.3 points a game.

The Red Devils defense dominated most opponents as they ranked 2nd in the AHSAA. The defense gave up just 8.1 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Red Devils have Finished 25-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Fyffe has gone a combined 168-11. Their 93.9% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Fyffe has finished a combined 284-41. Their 87.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 2A and 1st in the AHSAA. The Red Devils have been successful on the football field with twenty-five winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1996.

The Red Devils are led by head coach Paul Benefield who is entering his twenty-seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 292-44 over the past twenty-six seasons at Fyffe. Under his direction the Red Devils have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-five times. They have won eighteen region crowns with Coach Benefield. Coach Benefield has won six state championships at Fyffe, the last coming in 2022. His 337 wins rank 3rd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Benefield's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-nine times and won twenty region championships. He has a 63-23 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches.

The Red Devils will always be favored to win a state championship it seems and this year will be no different. They do need to replace most of the offensive line as four were lost to graduation. The offense and the defense will remain the same in Fyffe. They will run the football on almost every down. Basically the only option is whether it will be to the right or to the left.

The Red Devils enter the 2023 season riding a 15 game winning streak. They have also won 12 consecutive regular season games. Fyffe has won 11 consecutive region games. They have won 8 straight games on their home turf at Paul Benefield Stadium.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Fyffe has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Red Devils enter the season with expectations of not only a region crown but will be contending for a trip to the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region seven and could very well be representing the North in the Class 2A title game. The Red Devils have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2000 and this year should be no exception.

Before getting injured, Junior Logan Anderson led the team with 1,820 yards rushing and 32 touchdowns. He will be back for another season.

Junior QB Blake Dobbins will be returning to lead the offense. Last year he completed 24 of 39 passes for 482 yards and 12 TDs.

Caleb Mitchell will be a leader along the line of scrimmage.

The Red Devils open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Geraldine on Friday, September 1 at Paul Benefield Stadium. Last year the Geraldine Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 9-4 and in third place in Class 3A region six. The Bulldogs lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 3A playoffs to Sylvania by a score of 27-7.

Fyffe and Geraldine have met a total of 82 times on the football field. The Red Devils have a 45-35-2 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2022 with Fyffe winning by a score of 34-6.

Fyffe lost 2A All-State  offensive lineman Evan Chandler to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating was teammate running back Brodie Hicks.

The Red Devils return 2A All-State Junior running back Logan Anderson. He was named to the first team last season. The Red Devils also return Junior offensive lineman Tucker Wilks. He was named to the first team.
