 2023 Preview

Billingsley finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Billingsley just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region four with a 3-4 region record.

Billingsley was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bears want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.2 points a game.

Billingsley struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 36.1 points a game.

Since 2010, Billingsley has gone a combined 71-71. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Billingsley has managed to compile a record of 127-142. Their 47.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 1A and 220th in the AHSAA.

The Bears are led by head coach Lanny Jones who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-7 record in his first season at Billingsley. The Bears have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Jones. Over the course of his career, Coach Jones' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times . The Bears have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 56-49 last season. That ranks 5th in Class 1A and 120th in the AHSAA.

The Bears could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region four this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Billingsley came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

Junior QB Landon Jones will be returning after completing 121 of 181 passes for 1,583 yards last season along with 12 touchdowns.

The defense will be led by Nathan Gilmore this season after collecting 85 total tackles last season.

The Bears open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Prattville Christian on Friday, August 25 at Panther Field. Last year the Prattville Christian Panthers finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class 3A region three. The Panthers ended last season on a positive note with a win over Monroe County by a score of 42-12 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Billingsley and Prattville Christian have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Bears have a 7-3-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2022 with Prattville Christian winning by a score of 25-14.
