 2023 Preview

Appalachian completed the 2022 season with a 5-6 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 1A region seven, the Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Appalachian's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Addison by a score of 66-22.

It marked the first time since the 2019 season that the Eagles qualified for the playoffs.

Since 2010, Appalachian has gone a combined 44-84. Their 34.4% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Appalachian has managed to compile a record of 108-151. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 37th in Class 1A and 267th in the AHSAA.

The Eagles are led by head coach Neal Whittington who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 6-14 over the past two seasons at Appalachian. Under his direction the Eagles have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Whittington.

The Eagles could turn some heads this fall as they will surprise a few teams if they are not ready to play. The Eagles have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 59-51 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 1A and 110th in the AHSAA.

The Eagles have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region seven this season.

Junior QB Sean Curtis will be returning after completing 105 of 179 passes for 1,657 yards last season along with 16 touchdowns.

Curtis also rushed for anther 1,023 yards and scored 12 TDs.

The defense will be led by Oliver Moody this season after collecting 150 total tackles last season.

The Eagles open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Locust Fork on Thursday, August 24 at James E. Carr Stadium. Last year the Locust Fork Hornets finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in fourth place in Class 2A region six. The Hornets lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Tuscaloosa Academy by a score of 42-28.

Appalachian and Locust Fork have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 2-13-0 record against the Hornets. They last met in 2022 with Locust Fork winning by a score of 58-32.

Appalachian lost 1A All-State  defensive lineman Cameron Vick to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. Also graduating was teammate athlete Garrett Helms.
