2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Smiths Station finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Smiths Station finished eighth in Class 7A region two with a 1-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Smiths Station was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Panthers want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.9 points a game. Smiths Station struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 42.7 points a game. The Panthers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, Smiths Station has gone a combined 54-80. Their 40.3% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 7A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Smiths Station has managed to compile a record of 102-153. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 7A and 280th in the AHSAA. The Panthers will be under the direction of new head football coach Bryant Garrison as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Garrison was the head coach at Slocomb last season where his team finished 5-5. The Panthers have one of the toughest schedules in the state this season. Their non-region opponents finished 19-5 last year. The Panthers have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 72-43 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 7A and 5th in the AHSAA. The Panthers enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 7 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Panthers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two. The Panthers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Pleasant Grove on Friday, August 25 at Panther Stadium. Last year the Pleasant Grove Spartans finished with an overall record of 11-2 and in second place in Class 5A region five. The Spartans lost in the semi-finals round of the Class 5A playoffs to Ramsay by a score of 27-20. This will be the second meeting between Smiths Station and Pleasant Grove on the football field. The Panthers have a 0-1-0 record against the Spartans. They last met in with | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
