2022 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Gaston finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Gaston finished eighth in Class 2A region six with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The defense allowed a team record 528 points last season. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Gaston averaged scoring just 8.7 points a game. The Bulldogs also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 52.8 points a game. The Bulldogs would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, Gaston has gone a combined 43-83. Their 34.1% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 2A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Gaston has managed to compile a record of 126-147. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 2A and 228th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Matt Harris who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 2-18 over the past two seasons at Gaston. The Bulldogs have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Harris. Coach Harris' overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 2-18 (10.0%). The Gaston Bulldogs will play in Class 2A region six during the 2022 season. The Bulldogs enter the 2022 season in the middle of a 7 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Bulldogs will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region six. The Bulldogs open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Asbury on Friday, August 19 at Captain Bill Boyd Field. Last year the Asbury Rams finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 3A region seven. The Rams closed out the regular season with a loss to Ragland by a score of 38-6. Gaston and Asbury have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 6-1-0 record against the Rams. They last met in 2021 with Asbury winning by a score of 33-8. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
