 2022 Preview 


       Corner finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Corner finished sixth in Class 5A region six with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Yellow Jackets lost as many games as in any season since 2015.

       Corner was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Yellow Jackets want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.4 points a game.

       Since 2010, Corner has gone a combined 58-68. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 37th in Class 4A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Corner has managed to compile a record of 105-154. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 4A and 283rd in the AHSAA.




       The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Jon Cooper who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Corner. The Yellow Jackets have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Cooper.

       Coach Cooper's overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 35-38 (47.9%). Over the course of his career, Coach Cooper's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times .

       The Yellow Jackets will be depending on three year starter Gavin Brown to lead the charge from his running back spot this season.

       The Corner Yellow Jackets will play in Class 4A region five during the 2022 season. The Yellow Jackets may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 5A to 4A. They will compete in region five this year.

       The Yellow Jackets enter the 2022 season in the middle of a 7 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

       It will be an uphill battle for the Yellow Jackets if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season. After just 2 wins last year, Corner will be hoping to become more competitive in the region.

       The Yellow Jackets open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent St. Clair County on Friday, August 26 at St. Clair Stadium. Last year the St. Clair County Fighting Saints finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in eighth place in Class 5A region six. The Fighting Saints closed out the regular season with a loss to John Carroll by a score of 49-0.

       Corner and St. Clair County have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 8-2-0 record against the Fighting Saints. They last met in 2021 with Corner winning by a score of 21-13.

       Corner returns 5A All-State Senior defensive lineman Cade Rouse. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

Bart Starr received coaching from Kentucky great Babe Parilli his senior season at Sidney Lanier in hopes of joining Bear Bryant at Kentucky. He had to settle for Alabama.
