 2022 Preview 


       Bessemer Academy finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. With their 3-2 region record and a third place finish in Class AAA region two, the Rebels earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. Bessemer Academy's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Lee-Scott Academy by a score of 21-15.

       Bessemer Academy took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2012. The Rebels lost as many games as in any season since 2012. The Rebels hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just three games which followed a 8-3 record in 2020.

       As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Bessemer Academy has gone a combined 115-37. Their 75.7% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class AAA over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Bessemer Academy has gone a combined 235-75. Their 76.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class AAA and 1st in the AISA. The Rebels have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time.




       The Rebels are led by head coach Jonathan Wright who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-7 record in his first season at Bessemer Academy. Under his direction the Rebels have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Wright.

       Coach Wright's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 3-7 (30.0%).

       The Bessemer Academy Rebels will play in Class AAA region one during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Rebels remain in AAA but move from region two over to region one. Bessemer Academy will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season.

       With a little luck and some improvement, the Rebels could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season. They have managed to qualify for the playoffs every year since 2012 and hopes are high to extend that streak.

       The Rebels open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Banks Academy on Friday, August 26 at Norton Field. Last year the Banks Academy Jets finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in fourth place in Class AA region one. The Jets lost in the first round of the Class AA playoffs to Autauga Academy by a score of 47-14.

       Bessemer Academy and Banks Academy have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 1-3-0 record against the Jets. They last met in with

       Bessemer Academy returns AISA All-State Senior linebacker DJ Harris. He was named to the second team last season. The Rebels also return Senior offensive lineman Josh Dailey. He was named to the honorable mention team.

From 1947 until his retirement in 1992 Glenn Daniel's teams won 302 games at Pine Hill and Luverne. He was the winningest coach in state history until 2010.
