 2016 Preview

UMS-Wright completed the 2015 season with a 12-1 record. The Bulldogs cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year UMS-Wright captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 4A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. UMS-Wright lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Leeds team by a score of 33-0.

The defense was very stingy last season as UMS-Wright ranked 21st in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 12.2 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have gone 24-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, UMS-Wright has gone a combined 63-18. Their 78.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 4A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, UMS-Wright has gone a combined 243-85. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 4A and 13th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2007.

The Bulldogs are led by head coach Terry Curtis who is entering his eighteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 190-44 over the past seventeen seasons at UMS-Wright. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of seventeen times. They have won thirteen region crowns with Coach Curtis. Coach Curtis has won five state championships at UMS-Wright, the last coming in 2012.

Coach Curtis' overall record as a head football coach in twenty-seven season stands at 267-80 (76.9%). His 267 wins rank 3rd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Curtis' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-four times and won sixteen region championships. He has a 59-19 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches.

The UMS-Wright Bulldogs will play in Class 4A region one during the 2016 season.

The Bulldogs enter the 2016 season having won 28 straight region games.

The Bulldogs enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region one and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the South in the Class 4A Super Seven come December. The Bulldogs have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 1993 and this year should be no exception.

Michael Matthews rushed for 1,939 yards last season and returns for his senior year at running back for the Bulldogs.

Quarterback Tanner Allen returns for his senior season after completing 77 of 132 passes for 1,195 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior last season.

The Bulldogs have won 28 consecutive region games and will be favored to extend that streak this season.

The Bulldogs open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Mary Montgomery on Friday, August 19 at Erwin S. Cooper Stadium. Last year the Mary Montgomery Vikings finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in eighth place in Class 7A region one. The Vikings closed out the regular season with a loss to Vigor by a score of 21-15.

UMS-Wright and Mary Montgomery have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 10-5-0 record against the Vikings. They last met in 2011 with UMS-Wright winning by a score of 24-0.

UMS-Wright returns 4A All-State Senior athlete Michael Matthews. He was named to the first team last season.

College prospects include: Michael Matthews (6-0, 200) running back, Ty Rocconi (6-0, 190) safety,
