2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Oxford finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Oxford finished fourth in Class 6A region three with a 2-4 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Oxford took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2007. The Yellow Jackets lost as many games as in any season since 2007. Oxford was inconsistent offensively last year and that needs to pick up if the Yellow Jackets want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.4 points a game. Since 2010, Oxford has gone a combined 43-27. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 6A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Oxford has managed to compile a record of 182-98. Their 65.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 6A and 58th in the AHSAA. The Yellow Jackets have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time. The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Ryan Herring who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 18-16 over the past three seasons at Oxford. Under his direction the Yellow Jackets have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Herring. Coach Herring's overall record as a head football coach in ten season stands at 64-47 (57.7%). Over the course of his career, Coach Herring's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won one region championship. The Oxford Yellow Jackets will play in Class 6A region seven during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Yellow Jackets remain in 6A but move from region three over to region seven. With a little luck and some improvement, the Yellow Jackets could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season. Oxford came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. The Yellow Jackets open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Talladega on Friday, August 19 at Lamar Field. Last year the Talladega Tigers finished with an overall record of 2-7 and in sixth place in Class 5A region three. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Munford by a score of 35-0. Oxford and Talladega have met a total of 53 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 31-18-4 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2003 with Oxford winning by a score of 31-0. Oxford returns 6A All-State Senior linebacker K.J. Britt. He was named to the first team last season. College prospects include: Brett Houston (6-3, 345) offensive center, Kenney Britt (6-0, 232) inside linebacker, | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
