2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Madison Academy completed the 2015 season with a 11-2 record. Last year Madison Academy captured the region eight title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Madison Academy lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Piedmont team by a score of 35-21. The defense was very stingy last season as Madison Academy ranked 33rd in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 14.3 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Mustangs have gone 25-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Madison Academy has gone a combined 75-11. Their 87.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 4A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Madison Academy has managed to compile a record of 161-127. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 4A and 116th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2002. Eric Cohu resigned in January to become the offensive coordinator and international ambassador for the Israel Football League's national team. He turned around the Mustang football program upon his arrival in 2009. The team had won a total of only five playoff game previously before he took over the program. Over the past seven seasons his teams went 87-12 including 25-4 in the playoffs and 50-1 in region play. The Mustangs won three state championships in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The 2011 squad lost in the championship game. He has worked with the Israeli team every summer since 2007 as a consultant. Grant Reynolds will take over as the head football coach at Madison Academy for the 2016 season. Reynolds spent the past ten seasons as the head coach at Boyd-Buchanan in Tennessee and posted a 81-49 record including 15-10 in the playoffs. He attended Harding University in Arkansas prior to serving ten seasons as an assistant at Boyd-Buchanan. The Madison Academy Mustangs will play in Class 4A region seven during the 2016 season. The Mustangs move up in classification to Class 4A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Mustangs have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 60-40 last season. That ranks 6th in Class 4A and 38th in the AHSAA. Region seven will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. The Mustangs enter the 2016 season riding a 8 game regular season winning streak. Madison Academy has won 35 consecutive region games. While most teams rebuild during the off season, Madison Academy has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Mustangs should be considered one of the favorites for the region seven championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Mustangs have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2008 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Mustangs will be without head coach Eric Cohu and make the leap to Class 4A. It will be a new challenge for them in 2016. Madison Academy has won 35 consecutive region games but those were in 3A and the competition will be tougher this season. The Mustangs open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Ensworth TN on Friday, August 26. Madison Academy and Ensworth TN have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 0-2-0 record against Ensworth TN. They last met in 2015 with Ensworth TN winning by a score of 28-7. Madison Academy returns 3A All-State Senior offensive lineman Austin Troxell. He was named to the first team last season. The Mustangs also return Senior defensive back Keke Matthews. He was named to the second team. College prospects include: Austin Troxell (6-7, 275) offensive tackle, Grayson Edgemon (6-4, 190) quarterback, | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hamilton shutout an amazing 14 consecutive opponents from 1928-1930. A streak that will never be matched in modern football.
