Summary:
            
The Jeff Davis Volunteers won their first state championship by defeating Vestavia Hills 21-7 for the Class 4A title. It snapped a string of six straight titles by Birmingham schools. The Vols used a punishing rushing attack that accounted for 192 of it's 274 yards in the second half. Junior running back Willie May was named the MVP for Jeff Davis after rushing for 93 yard and scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns.
             Jeff Davis got rolling on their third possession of the game by mounting a 13 play, 84 yard drive for their first points. The game remained at 7-0 until the fourth quarter. Vestavia Hills would be shutout until late when on fourth and nine Murphy hit McEachran for an 11 yard touchdown pass with 1:45 left to play. Scott Waggoner led Vestavia Hills with 39 yards on 12 carries.

Murphy and Theodore battled through seven overtimes before the Panthers came out on top 33-26 in 1979.
