Quarterback Jimmy Dawson and fullback Tony Narramore would lead the Excel offense by scoring two touchdowns each in a 30-6 win over Sweet Water for the 1969 Class 1A state championship. Excel led early in the final quarter but Mickey Pope would tighten the score on a brilliant 86 yard run to cut the margin to 14-6.
Excel would counter the score with one of their own with 2:25 remaining in the game on a 5 yard Narramore run. The two point conversion would almost seal the victory for the Panthers.
