AHSFHS Power Ratings have Russellville as a 11 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Russellville Golden Tigers defeated Fairview by a score of 31-14 in week 10 on the road  on Fri., Oct. 27 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Russellville and Fairview have met 3 times on the field.... Russellville holds a 2-1 edge in the games played.

Comments:    This is for the 5A Region 8 title. Fairview will be vying for their first title since 2019 and Russellville is going for their 3rd straight.

Fairview has breezed through their schedule until this last week when Lawrence County gave them all they wanted in 14-7 battle. Fairview had some ball security issues against the Red Devils, the level of competition is much higher this week, so they can't afford those types of mistakes. The Aggies have a great trio of Redding (QB), Jones (RB) and Harper (RB), that can grind the ball down the field. It'd be smart to keep the Golden Tigers offense off the field.

IMO, for what it's worth, Cam Phinizee will be the best player Fairview has seen all year. He isn't all they have though, Burch to Crumpton has been an effective combination in the passing game all year. I just think this is a huge uphill battle for Fairview.

Prediction:  Russellville 42 Fairview 17

 Sparkman (0-0) at

7A-R4  Class/Region 7A-R4

AHSFHS Power Ratings have Sparkman as a 2 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Florence Falcons defeated Sparkman by a score of 36-17 in week 10 on the road  on Fri., Oct. 27 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Florence and Sparkman have met 16 times on the field.... Florence holds a 14-2 edge in the games played.

Comments:    Probably going to be for fourth in the region and honor of traveling to Thompson (congratulations!) in the first round. I say probably, because everything in this region is so chaotic, I hate to make any definitive claims.

Sparkman started off hot, but then hit the back half of their schedule, which has been a lot tougher. They've subsequently dropped 3 straight. However, two of those games were battles, a 1 point loss to James Clemens and a 2 OT loss to Huntsville. It's now or never for the Senators to get back to winning. They held a 15 points lead against Huntsville with 3:19 left. You just hope that it wasn't one more those demoralizing losses. Would like to see them rebound and come out with fire. Josh Ward was getting it done with both his legs and his arm in the first half. They'll need more of that against a superb Florence defense.

Florence comes in riding a 2 game win streak, and winners of 3 of their last 4. Florence has really started to open up their playbook a little more and with that Leo Glover ans been able to show his ability more. Much like Ward, he scored with his arm (2 TD passes) and with his legs (1 TD run) against Grissom. It may be cliche, but I think a lot of this game will depend on how Sparkman does respond after last week.

Prediction:  Florence 27 Sparkman 14

 South Lamar (0-0) at
 Lynn (0-0)

0-0 (0-0)  Record 0-0 (0-0)
1A-R5  Class/Region 1A-R5
NR  ASWA Ranking NR
33.8  Power Rating 55.7
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Lynn as a 24 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Lynn Bears defeated South Lamar by a score of 47-20 in week 10 on the road  on Fri., Oct. 27 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Lynn and South Lamar have met 16 times on the field.... The teams have both won 8 games.

Comments:    This is for the region title. I think most thought Pickens County would take the region, but here we are with the two teams left standing. South Lamar last won a region title in 2018 while Lynn is the defending region champion.

South Lamar is led by one man wrecking crew Charles Neal who against Marion Co rushed for 138 yards on 8 carries, scored 3 rushing TDs, scored on a pick 6 and recovered a fumble. Just your average run of the mill game.

Lynn utilizes the wr screen well with some shifty receivers out there like Logan Madison, but make no mistake about it, QB Cale Tittle can go up top and ruin your night. This should be interesting as these teams run very different styles of offense.

Prediction:  Lynn 24 South Lamar 14

 Corner (0-0) at
 Haleyville (0-0)

5A-R5  Class/Region 4A-R5

AHSFHS Power Ratings have Corner as a 10 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Haleyville Lions defeated Corner by a score of 32-13 in week 10 on the road  on Fri., Oct. 27 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Haleyville and Corner have met 6 times on the field.... Haleyville holds a 4-2 edge in the games played.

Comments:    How 'bout them Yellow Jackets? Set a school record with their 8th straight win this past Friday night against Curry and now are set to possibly win their first region title since 1987. The only thing standing in the way is a feisty group of Lions down in Haleyville.

Corner comes at you with a whole host of threats with Conner, Dyer and Taylor to name a few. They've only been held under 30 points once this year and that was to preseason region favorite Dora. Conner is a load from the QB position and will straight up run people over in the open field.

Haleyville is no slouch, coming with just the two losses and only 1 in region. Cooper McNutt (QB) is an absolute gunslinger who throws a beautiful deep ball. I don't know if Corner has seen anything like that this season. Could make for an interesting game.

Prediction:  Corner 35 Haleyville 22

 Millry (0-0) at

0-0 (0-0)  Record 0-0 (0-0)
1A-R1  Class/Region 1A-R1
NR  ASWA Ranking NR
55.3  Power Rating 42.5
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Millry as a 11 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Leroy Bears defeated Millry by a score of 26-0 in week 10 on the road  on Fri., Oct. 27 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Leroy and Millry have met 68 times on the field.... Leroy holds a 48-19 edge in the games played.

Comments:    As most of the state enters the final week of region play, the theme this week will be games with region title and playoff implications. For the second year in a row, these two meet in a winner-takes-all game for the region championship.

You'll get to see some spectacular QB play in this one, and that guy is Brandon Huebner for Leroy. His favorite target during his career has been Taylor Crumedy, so expect to see a lot from that connection in this one. All that needs to be said about their defense is they're giving up less than 10 points per game, and they haven't allowed more than 16 in a game yet. It is worth noting, though, that the only time Leroy gave up more than 20 points in a game last year was when they gave up 36 to Millry in a regular season loss. The biggest story for Leroy continues to be the absence of their coach Jason Massey, who was recently deployed by the military.

Millry has their own electrifying connection on offense between QB Daylon Edmunds and two-way player Jaylen Manuel. Those two power an offense that has averaged 47.2 points per game this year. Defensively, they're pretty good as well, allowing just 10.1 points per game, only allowing more than 16 once to 5A Citronelle in 26-27 loss to open the season.

These two met twice last year, with Millry winning in the regular season, and Leroy winning in the semifinals. The winner will likely be the favorite to reach the state championship game in Tuscaloosa, but there's a good chance we'll see this game again regardless.

Prediction:  Milly 34, Leroy 26

 Thomasville (0-0) at
 Mobile Christian (0-0)
at Harrison Field
Thomasville   Mobile Christian
0-0 (0-0)  Record 0-0 (0-0)
3A-R3  Class/Region 4A-R1
NR  ASWA Ranking NR
58.3  Power Rating 69.2
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Mobile Christian as a 13 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Mobile Christian Leopards defeated Thomasville by a score of 45-14 in week 10 on the road  on Fri., Oct. 27 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Mobile Christian and Thomasville have met 4 times on the field.... Mobile Christian holds a 4-0 edge in the games played.

Comments:    There are plenty of matchups this week with region and playoff implications, but this is one of the few between two unbeaten teams.

Mobile Christian has been a juggernaut this year, as expected, especially on defense. They've given up 21 points total across their last eight games, including five shutouts. Meanwhile, their offense is also averaging over 40 ppg. QB Damien Gatson is very efficient through the air, and they do a great job of spreading touches around to their skill players.

Thomasville has flown a bit more under the radar despite an unblemished record, but it's true they haven't been as dominant as Mobile Christian. This team has a history of having a physical defense, and while they've given up points in a couple games this year, including their 34-28 win last week over W.S. Neal, they are still solid on that side of the ball, particularly at LB. They've been greatly improved on offense from last year, going from 21 ppg to nearly 35.

Mobile Christian hasn't really been challenged in-state this year, and while Thomasville is a solid team and will play with a chip on their shoulder, Mobile Christian is easily the most talented team in 3A.

Prediction:  Mobile Christian 41, Thomasville 7

 Southside Gadsden (0-0) at
 Moody (0-0)
at Bill Morris Stadium
Southside Gadsden   Moody
0-0 (0-0)  Record 0-0 (0-0)
6A-R8  Class/Region 5A-R6
NR  ASWA Ranking NR
63.7  Power Rating 73.4
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Moody as a 12 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Moody Blue Devils defeated Southside Gadsden by a score of 34-21 in week 10 on the road  on Fri., Oct. 27 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Moody and Southside Gadsden have met 4 times on the field.... Moody holds a 3-1 edge in the games played.

Comments:    We'll go ahead and say this is yet another game with region title implications, although the circumstances are interesting, but I'll go through that at the end.

Moody is coming off a heartbreaking loss to Leeds which saw them erase an early 14-0 deficit to tie the game at 21 late before falling behind once again by three. They had a chance to tie the game in the final minute, but the field goal was blocked by the Green Wave. Things don't get any easier this week. QB Charlie Johnston is capable of making any throw when he gets into a rhythm, and he has a number of weapons to choose from. 4 star Auburn commit A'Mon Lane has been sidelined with a knee injury for most of this season, and while he's unlikely to return this week, he could give this team a boost if he returns for the playoffs.

Southside got a massive win over Leeds a couple weeks ago. I had felt this team had the potential to be as good or better than any team in Region 6 this year, so it was good to see them play up to that. This team has faced adversity all year after QB Gauge Nesmith was injured early in the year. His loss hurt their QB run game a bit, but they've adjusted well with Jordan Bryan under center, still averaging over 34 points per game with a very balanced attack.

A Moody win would create a 3-way tie atop the region standings between these two and Leeds. However, the tiebreaker would come down to total wins by defeated non-region opponents, which would most likely go to Southside anyway. So while the Panthers are basically playing with house money this week, the Blue Devils have a chip on their shoulders coming off a loss.

Prediction:  Moody 28, Southside 24

 Helena (0-0) at
 Benjamin Russell (0-0)
at Martin-Savarese Stadium
Helena   Benjamin Russell
0-0 (0-0)  Record 0-0 (0-0)
6A-R3  Class/Region 6A-R3
NR  ASWA Ranking NR
79.3  Power Rating 76.0
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Helena as a 1 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Benjamin Russell Wildcats defeated Helena by a score of 20-17 in week 10 on the road  on Fri., Oct. 27 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Benjamin Russell and Helena have met 6 times on the field.... The teams have both won 3 games.

Comments:    This region has been tough to predict all year with six competitive teams. but these two along with Homewood and Briarwood have emerged as the teams that will make the playoffs. I'll discuss seeding scenarios later.

Helena puts their undefeated season on the line as they fight for a region title just one season removed from missing the playoffs. Senior QB Carson Acker has played consistently all year, leading an offense averaging over 40 points a game. Their defense has been equally impressive allowing just 11 points a game.

Benjamin Russell has one of the most talented QBs in the state in Gabe Benton, although he does make his share of mistakes. Their best player, however, is Auburn commit Malcolm Simmons, who took over the game at one point in their win against Pelham.

A Helena win in this one gives them the region title, while Benjamin Russell would then be either 3rd if Homewood beats Briarwood or 2nd if Homewood loses that game. But should Ben Russell pull off the upset, they'll be in the driver's seat for the region title as they'd hold the head-to-head advantage over Helena and would likely win if there's a 3-way tie at the top with Briarwood. All that to basically say that the winner of this game wins the region.

Prediction:  Helena 29, Benjamin Russell 26

AHSFHS Power Ratings have Catholic Montgomery as a 12 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Catholic Montgomery Knights defeated Andalusia by a score of 27-14 in week 10 on the road  on Fri., Oct. 27 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Catholic Montgomery and Andalusia have met 5 times on the field.... Andalusia holds a 3-2 edge in the games played.

Comments:    This is the game we have all been waiting for. These two met twice last year with them splitting the series 1-1. However this one will be played in Montgomery, and Andalusia will be facing one of the best defenses in the state. Andalusia has played some very good opponents like Bibb County on their non region schedule. Catholic played McGill Toolen and shut them out.

Overall these two schools have done a great job of being undefeated at this point. There is a reason why these two are ranked Number One and Number Three in the polls. Something has to give, Andalusia has great running backs, and a great quarterback. Catholic has a great defense, which hasn't allowed a point since September 8th. It will be a great football game on Friday.

I think Andalusia comes into Montgomery and snaps Catholic's long winning streak. I don't think this will be the last time these two play this season, but this round to the Bulldogs and so does the region crown, their first since 2017

Prediction:  Andalusia 29 Catholic 28

 Highland Home (0-0) at

2A-R3  Class/Region 2A-R4
NR  ASWA Ranking NR
57.4  Power Rating 63.9
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Reeltown as a 9 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Reeltown Rebels defeated Highland Home by a score of 21-14 in week 10 on the road  on Fri., Oct. 27 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Reeltown and Highland Home have met 11 times on the field.... Reeltown holds a 10-1 edge in the games played.

Comments:    Another game, another region title on the line. These two 2A schools have smashed the competition that has been on their schedule so far this season. These two met in a similar situation last season, with Reeltown getting the one point victory.

Highland Home has not allowed a point since September 22nd. There is a big big key thing that I think makes the difference in this game. Talent. Highland Home has one of the most talented teams in the state, regardless of classification. But Reeltown has been Highland Home's boogeyman, as they are 1-9 all time against the Rebels. This will be another great matchup.

Remember that word we talked about? That is what will help get Highland Home the victory. Give me the Flying Squadron to get the region title.

Prediction:  Highland Home 34 Reeltown 26

 Vigor (0-0) at
 Gulf Shores (0-0)
at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium
Vigor   Gulf Shores
0-0 (0-0)  Record 0-0 (0-0)
5A-R1  Class/Region 6A-R1
NR  ASWA Ranking NR
64.4  Power Rating 73.7
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Gulf Shores as a 11 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Gulf Shores Dolphins defeated Vigor by a score of 42-12 in week 10 on the road  on Fri., Oct. 27 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Gulf Shores and Vigor have met 10 times on the field.... Vigor holds a 7-3 edge in the games played.

Comments:    If this game happened about five years ago, we would say 'Vigor by a lot of points' and move on with our lives. The problem is, this isn't the Gulf Shores from five years ago. This is a new Dolphin squad looking for their first region title.

Their off to their best start in program history. They have been really great this season. Vigor has been lurking, waiting for this moment. Vigor has been here, done that, as they are one of the best programs in the state. This is a classic example of the new kids on the block versus the veteran team. Can Vigor slow down the Dolphins offense?

I think they can slow down the Dolphin offense, but I think we will see that the Dolphin defense is no joke either. I think Gulf Shores will get their first region title, but it won't come easy. Give me the Dolphins in a defensive battle.

Prediction:  Gulf Shores 14 Vigor 8

 Carver Montgomery (0-0) at
 Pike Road (0-0)
at Pike Road Stadium
Carver Montgomery   Pike Road
0-0 (0-0)  Record 0-0 (0-0)
7A-R2  Class/Region 6A-R2
NR  ASWA Ranking NR
74.7  Power Rating 79.3
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Pike Road as a 7 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Pike Road Patriots defeated Carver Montgomery by a score of 43-22 in week 10 on the road  on Fri., Oct. 27 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Pike Road and Carver Montgomery have met 2 times on the field.... The teams have both won 1 game.

Comments:    A rematch of last year that was for the region crown, returns for another battle for the region crown. Pike Road bounced back after two tough losses to start the season. Carver has been inconsistent, but has shown flashes as one of the better teams in the 6A south.

I think we know what we will see when Pike Road shows up, but it just depends on the week for Carver Montgomery. This game could go many different ways. But there is no question that both teams are very talented.

I believe Pike Road is the more consistent team and will get the victory. Carver Montgomery won't go down without a fight, but at the end the Patriots get the victory and the region title.

Prediction:  Pike Road 31 Carver Montgomery 20

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

From 1947 until his retirement in 1992 Glenn Daniel's teams won 302 games at Pine Hill and Luverne. He was the winningest coach in state history until 2010.
