The 1990 Class 5A state championship game was billed as a matchup of the two best running backs in the state. It did not disappoint as both backs lived up to expectations. The Blount Leopards defeated the Homewood Patriots 36-24 in a standing room only Prichard Stadium behind the running of Sherman Williams and two big interception returns for touchdowns.

Williams rushed for 168 yards on 16 carries while Homewood tailback, Robert Davis, ran for 271 yards on 26 attempts but was not able to cross the goal line.

Quarterback Dameyune Craig tossed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Williams to give Blount an early 7-0 lead. The 7-play drive covered 80 yards that began after the Patriots missed a field goal. The Leopards came back following a 17-yard punt return by Williams to get their second score and a 9-yard run by Tomatra Johnson with 11:56 left in the first half. After a two point conversion, Blount led 15-0.

Homewood came right back with a 80-yard, nine-play drive ending with a 10-yard pass from Jay Robertson to Davis. Wes Sneed added a 25-yard field goal to cut the margin to 15-10 with 1:27 remaining before intermission. The Leopards wasted little time in moving the ball down the field for a score just before halftime.

Williams raced 55 yards for a touchdown with just 23 seconds left in the half. Blount led 22-10 after the quick 3-play 63 yard drive.

The second half began with Homewood putting together a 3-play drive that included a 42-yard run by Davis and a 22-yard touchdown pass from Robertson to Alexander Adamson with 10:35 left in the third. Early in the fourth quarter Homewood was on the move again before Clarence Abrams returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown that broke the backs of the Patriots and upped the Blount lead to 29-17 with 9:44 remaining in the game.

Not willing to give up quite yet, Robertson ran 8 yards for a touchdown to pull Homewood within 29-24 with 8:09 left. Davis had runs of 53 and 17 to set up the score.

The Patriots mounted another drive shortly thereafter before Kiplin Green intercepted another Robertson pass and returned it 29 yards for the final points of the game with 3:28 remaining to be played.

Robertson completed 14 of 23 passes for 154 yards and the two touchdowns. Craig completed 4 of 7 passes for 77 yards to pace the Leopards.

Davis finished the year with 2,258 yards and 27 touchdowns on 242 carries. Sherman Williams set a state record for yards in a season by rushing for 3,004 yards on 307 carries and scored 28 touchdowns. Davis may have won the battle of the tailbacks but Williams got what he wanted most, a state championship.

The title for Blount was the first for the school. Under the direction of Coach Ben Harris, the leopards went on to win four more championships over the next eight seasons.
