Region 1

Washington County - Al Earnest

Al Earnest leaves Washington County after just two seasons with a 16-7 record including 2-2 in the playoffs. He accepted a position with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in South Alabama.


2017 Season - Devin Roberts

Saraland assistant coach Devin Roberts has been named the new head football coach at Washington County. He is a native of Washington County. Roberts has been an assistant at Saraland and Auburn recently.






Region 2

Barbour County - Chris Reynolds

Chris Reynolds leaves Barbour County after three seasons without recording a single win. His record was 0-29.


2017 Season - Steve Fryer

Steve Fryer takes on the difficult task of turning around the fortunes at Barbour County. The team has not won a game since the 2013 season.






Region 3

Calhoun - Bill Lamar

Bill Lamar leaves Calhoun after one year with a 0-10 record.


2017 Season - Ervin Starr

Ervin Starr will coach both football and basketball at Calhoun in 2017. Starr played at Cherokee County under legendary coach Bobby Joe Johnson.





Zion Chapel - Bubba Nall

After just a single season as the head football coach at Zion Chapel, Bubba Nall leaves the program. His only team finished with a 3-7 record last year.


2017 Season - Randy Bryant

Randy Bryant takes over the helm at Zion Chapel entering the 2017 football season.






Region 4

Aliceville - Rico Jackson

After just two seasons at Aliceville, Rico Jackson leaves with a 19-7 record. His final team reached the state championship game before falling to Fyffe. His overall record at Aliceville and Fairfield stands at 35-21 in five seasons.


2017 Season - Melvin Pete Jr.

Melvin Pete Jr. takes over the football program in Aliceville for the 2017 season. He has previously been the head coach at Central Tuscaloosa where he compiled a 33-23 record and led the Falcons to the 2007 state championship.





Thorsby - Billy Jackson

Billy Jackson leaves Thorsby after eight seasons with a 28-55 record under his belt. His final season produced a 1-9 record, the third of his career with the program. Three f his squads reached the playoffs but none were able to win a post season game.


2017 Season - Daryl Davis

Daryl Davis begins his second stint at Thorsby this season. He was the head coach at the school from 2005-08 with a 10-30 record. He spent the past few years coaching the Junior High football team.





Verbena - Mike Harris

Mike Harris leaves Verbena after fourteen seasons. His last two teams each qualified for the playoffs.


2017 Season - Tyler Kelley

Tyler Kelley, a 2008 graduate of Verbena, returns home as the head football coach in 2017. He spent the last couple of years as an assistant coach at Billingsley after graduating from Troy where he played running back for the Trojans.






Region 5

Woodland - Randy Boyd

Randy Boyd will not return to the Woodland sideline in 2017. He was the head football coach with the school the past three seasons and compiled a 12-21 record including 2-1 in the playoffs. His last two teams only managed three wins.


2017 Season - Jeremy Stanford

Jeremy Stanford, a graduate of Clay County High School, played for Danny Horn. He has been an assistant under Horn the past two seasons. This is the first head coaching job for Stanford.





Horseshoe Bend - Jason Franklin

Jason Franklin leaves Horseshoe Bend after nine seasons with a 34-59 overall record. His teams made three playoff appearances but failed to produce a win in the post season. He has accepted the head coaching job at Holtville for the 2017 season.


2017 Season - Josh Averett

Josh Averett, a graduate of Brookwood High School, played for Alabama in 2002 and 2003, lettering as a wide receiver in his final year. He worked as an assistant at Thorsby, Maplesville, Pelham and St. Clair County.

Averett was the head football coach at Gaston (2010-2012) with a 11-20 record.






Region 6

Section - Drew Davis

Drew Davis leaves Section after two years with a 2-18 record. His teams finished 1-9 each season.


2017 Season - Luke Powell

Luke Powell will guide Section onto the football field during the 2017 season.






Region 7

Tanner - Laron White

In fourteen seasons at Tanner, Laron White won 148 games and a couple of state championships.

His teams at Tanner went 91-6 in Region play and 29-12 in the post seasons. Every one of his teams qualified for the playoffs.


2017 Season - Maurice Belser

Maurice Belser takes over the football program at Tanner for the upcoming season. He steps into a quality program that has a winning tradition.

Belser has previously been a head coach at Aliceville (2002-03) and Hillcrest Evergreen (2006-09) with a record of 25-38. He is a 1991 graduate of Cordova and a member of the Alabama 1992 championship team.






Region 8

Lamar County - James Moore

After two seasons at Lamar County James Moore leaves to accept an assistant position on Kenny Kings staff at Daphne. His two teams at Lamar County finished a combined 9-12 and 0-1 in the playoffs.


2017 Season - Robert Bradford

Robert Bradford takes over the helm at Lamar County after working as an assistant coach at Chilton County last season.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
