For The ASWA

Pinson Valley running back Nick Gibson enjoyed one of the best rushing performances in AHSAA history on Friday night.

Gibson is this week's AHSAA Offensive Player of the Week after rolling up 447 yards and six touchdowns on 34 carries to lead the Indians to a 48-36 victory over Mortimer Jordan. The 447 yards ranks fifth in AHSAA single-game history, according to the governing body's online record book, and he scored on runs of 40, 12, 67, 75, 5 and 63 yards.

"I just played the way I would against any other team," Gibson told The Birmingham News after gaining 262 yards on his six TD runs. "I worked hard in the offseason and coach has been pushing me to be my best, so I think the work is paying off."

Gibson edged two finalists for the Offensive Player of the Week award – Weaver's Timothy Hawkins and Madison Academy's Kerryon Johnson.

Hawkins threw a 75-yard touchdown pass, had a 73-yard touchdown run, and returned an interception 100 yards for a  TD in a 38-13 victory over Glencoe. He completed 5 of 15 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown and rushed 17 times for 110 yards and two scores.

This week's Defensive/Special Teams Player of the Week is Barbour County's Daquan Guice.

Guice returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a game-sealing 85-yard return on the final play of a 34-20 victory over Pike County. He also had 14 tackles to go with a 42-interception return and caught a two-point conversion to give the Jags a 28-20 lead.
