2013 Week 11

     ASWA Players of the Week

By Josh Bean
 For the ASWA

Dora had no answer for Charles Henderson senior John Johnson

Johnson ran 12 times for 300 yards, scoring on runs of 35, 73, 65, 15 and 35 yards, in a 67-7 victory over Dora in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. He also completed a 51-yard pass as the Trojans rolled up 684 yards of total offense.

For his performance, Johnson is this week's ASWA Offensive Player of the Week.

"John is an incredible football player, but he is an even better person," Charles Henderson coach Mike Dean told the Troy Messenger after Friday's win. "The world needs more young men like John Johnson. He is smart, and that carries over to his football skills. He is just a superstar both on and off the field."

Johnson edged out two finalists for the weekly award - Clarke Prep's Jarrette Pope and Hale County's Deacon Medders.

Medders threw three touchdown passes and ran for 121 yards in a 22-16 victory over Houston Academy. After Houston Academy scored with 5:04 to go, Medders ran 10 straight times as Hale County earned four first downs and ran out the clock to capture its first playoff victory since 2000.

Pope ran 40 times for 351 yards on 40 carries and scored five touchdowns as the Gators defeated Autauga Academy 52-27 in the first round of the AISA playoffs. He added nine tackles to lead the defense.

This week's ASWA Defense/Special Teams Player of the Week is Enterprise kicker Cade Stinnett. He kicked the game-winning 27-yard field goal - his third of the night - to lift Enterprise to a 30-27 victory over Spain Park in the Class 6A playoffs. He also made field goals of 35 and 27 yards and was 3-for-3 on extra points.

The finalists for the Defense/Special Teams award are Kingwood Christian's Montez Haynes and Piedmont's Exavyer Jackson.

Haynes kicked a 42-yard field goal and intercepted two passes, including one returned 50 yards for a touchdown, in a 36-21 victory over Fort Dale Academy. He also caught five passes for 130 yards, including a 39-yard TD.

Jackson posted 14 tackles, including five for lost yardage, with four sacks and caused a fumble in a 38-0 victory over Winfield. Jackson also scored Piedmont's first touchdown on a 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

This week, ASWA members from Albertville, Birmingham, Brewton, Centre, Cullman, Demopolis, Dothan, Florence, Fort Payne, Gadsden, Grove Hill, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Oneonta and Tuscaloosa submitted  nominations.
