NFL Draft

The first NFL draft was held in Philadelphia on February 8, 1936. The first player ever selected in the draft was Jay Berwanger from the University of Chicago by the Eagles.

He was immediately traded to the Bears who could not come to a contract agreement with the college star and he never played in the NFL. Actually only twenty four of the eighty one players selected that day played in the NFL in 1936.

Over the years Alabama high school football players have represented the state well in the NFL draft annually. There have been four players from Alabama selected as the number one overall selection in the draft.

Bo Jackson #40 gains yardage at McAdory high school
No Alabama high school football players were selected in the first NFL draft but the next season saw Tarzan White from Escambia County high school in Atmore selected in the second round by the New York Giants. He had been a star at Alabama where he played along side Paul Bryant for a team that won the 1934 national championship.

White would play in the NFL for the Giants and the Chicago Cardinals. He played offensive line and was named to the very first Pro Bowl team during his NFL career. He was also a member of the 1938 World Champion New York Giants. Following retirement he would return to the high school ranks as head coach in Menlo, Georgia where his team won a state championship.

In 1989 Bobby Humphrey was selected by the Denver Broncos in the supplemental draft. He was selected in the first round by the Broncos. Bo Jackson was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the Number one overall selection but chose to play baseball. The following year the Los Angeles Raiders selected Bo in the 7th round. Now that was a steal.

AHSFHS.org has worked to research the draft and find the players that were high schools stars in Alabama prior to being drafted by an NFL team. This, like everything else we do is a work in progress. While it is believed we have most of the players it is possible we missed a few. If so let us know in the forums or email us at dparker@ahsfhs.org.

You can find the link to the NFL players that were drafted under 'Players" on the menu near the top of most any page on the website. Or you can go directly there by clicking the link below.
