Thomas DeGraffenreid "Reed" Hughes was born in 1927 in Pickens County, Alabama. He was an educator and coach for 45 years in the state.
His coaching career began at Wadley where he remained for three seasons. He was the head football coach at McKenzie (1955-58), Wilcox County (1960-69) and Pickens County High School (1970-71).
In 1972 he stepped aside and entered the insurance business for two years in south Alabama before returning to high school coaching and teaching.
He landed at Millport in 1974 for two seasons before moving to Marengo County for the 1976 season. In 1980 he finished his career as a head football coach at Dallas County for two seasons with a 12-8 record.
Coach Hughes overall football record is 144-102-6 in 26 years of service as a head football coach in Alabama. His record is incomplete as a few games are missing that he coached. His son, Ronny, had brief stints as a head football coach at Fayette Academy, Warrior Academy and Carrollton from 1993-2004.
Reed Hughes passed away December 19, 2000 in Carrollton, Alabama.
